(THREAD) It's going to be King Charles III, the UK PM says. In 1952, Queen Elizabeth kept her name, which was a gamble. The first Elizabeth is England's greatest monarch. #ElizabethII (1)
But suffice it to say, Elizabeth II is possibly the UK's second-greatest monarch. Greater than Henry VIII. Greater than George IV, the king who erred in not letting America go, but then oversaw ending slavery and defeating Napoleon. QEII was a lot like Victoria, a modernist. (2)
But choosing Charles as a royal name? I wouldn't want to do it. The first King Charles I was beheaded by dictator Oliver Cromwell and the "Rump Parliament," the English legislature that was left after Cromwell's allies killed sympathizers. (3)
The execution of King Charles I was not because of religion. Not entirely. But Cromwell disliked Catholics and he suspected Charles was seeking aid from RC rulers in other nations in the Second Civil War. Charles I was killed in 1649. (4)
Cromwell then took over. He and the Parliament eliminated the monarchy. Charles II, the son, fled to Europe. English leaders were conflicted. (5)
The best movie you may not have seen is "Cromwell," 1970. Richard Harris as Cromwell. A young Tim Daly as the Prussian nephew of Charles I. Alec Guinness is great as Charles I, who had a stammer. (6)
Charles II was also a Protestant and was not opposed to be king. (Mary was the last Catholic monarch.) The English restored the monarchy and make Charles II the king in 1660. (7)
Charles II impregnated a lot of his mistresses. But he left no heir. That would be a problem. Charles II ruled until 1685. His brother, James II, took over. King James II was Catholic. The Church of England was run by the king. This was a big problem. (8)
My favorite Restoration movie or TV series is "The Last King" (2003), which is an odd title. It stars @FredrikSewell as Charles II. (9)

(THREAD) Ever notice the media trend - it's decades old - not to mention the political affiliation of accused officials if they are Democrats? The slaying of Las Vegas reporter Jeff German by an elected county Democrat has the media daring not to name the suspect's party. (1)
Some stories, of course, mention the suspect's party affiliation, lower down. They kind of have to. Jeff German's stories caused Robert Telles to lose his primary a few weeks ago. But not NBC News. No mention at all in initial draft. (2)
The media knows many people do not read past the headline or first paragraphs. If a Republican had killed a reporter, that would be big news to the media. A Democrat, however, becomes a "politician" or "elected official." (3)
I don't believe in heckling journalists. I have seen it done by both sides. I was once refused a media survey by a Tea Party voter in 2011. "I don't trust the media," he told me. In 2011. I never felt threatened. Instead, I felt afraid for the industry. (3)
When I was in the White House press room in 2017, the most frustrating thing I saw was the inability or the refusal of the media (MSM) to report so-called campaign collusion was not illegal. Instead, the press made every Russian contact illegal. (1)
They hounded Jeff Sessions on a meet-and-greet with ambassadors at the RNC in 2016. They suggested sharing polling data with Da RUSSIANS was illegal (!). Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) said Trump shared data with Russia on WISCONSIN. (2)
But the allure of the cheap and easy reporting on every Russian meeting backfired on CNN in June 2017, when CNN had to retract a story that @Scaramucci was under Senate investigation for a Davos talk he had with a Russian. (3)
DeSantis' victory in 2018 was against strong Democratic headwinds and Gillums' impressive cash haul of $55M. DeSantis was able to outspend Gillums in 2018. He also pounded Gillums on TV as being too liberal. (2)
But the GOP also held on to their big majorities in the Legislature. They lost no seats in the Senate and 2 in the House. (3)
The CFO of Bed, Bath and Beyond has jumped to his death, on Friday, in Tribeca, Manhattan. (1)
The @NYPost: "Gustavo Arnal, 52, who was also an executive vice president for the struggling home goods retailer, plunged from the 18th floor of 56 Leonard Street on Friday, police sources said." Arnal jumped from the so-called "Jenga" building. (2)
More from the @NYPost: "On Aug. 16, Arnal sold 42,513 shares in company stock for a little over a $1 million, according to MarketBeat (dot) com." (3)
@pnjaban@JoeBiden Ha. I was just told by an official Florida JOURN-O-List that the 2000 recount was not as bad as Jan. 6. Well, no, because Democrats like Lieberman and Warren Christopher leaned on Gore to accept results and court decree.
And Klain hated them for that. Watch HBO movie about it.
@pnjaban@JoeBiden Democrats were tremendously embittered by Florida recount. I am not sure why. They were never ahead in any official count or recount. This led them to say independent Pat Buchanan cost them Palm Beach County. They also vilified Katherine Harris. They had 1 million excuses. (2)
@pnjaban@JoeBiden Democrats also unleashed a torrent of viral misogyny against Katherine Harris, the Florida secretary of state. They pressured her to ignore the law and NOT certify the results. Does that sound familiar? (3)
