Heading to @BirmCons today where I’m very happy to be taking over teaching the Masters course, Contemporary Music Concepts and Practices! The course will focus on music about climate change, gender & sexuality, post-internet art, microtonality, drone, & lots more.
Week 1 of this today ~ an introduction to post-internet art and a terrific discussion around Jeniffer Walshe’s The Total Mountain!
Week 2! Music and climate change ~ discussion of ideas from John Luther Adams, Timothy Morton, & others. And we listened to some of Extinction Events and Dawn Chorus @lizalimcomposer@RiotEns 🌍
Week 3, which I called ‘Minimalism (After La Monte Young)’… discussion of ideas from Pauline Oliveros, Brian Eno, David Toop, and @HarrySword. Plus, we listened to Long Gradus (Part IV) by @sarahdavachi (which they loved)
Week 4: gender and sexuality. A discussion around Pauline Oliveros, Michael Wolters, Lauren Redhead, Trans Voices, Lucia Lucas, & others. And we watched Philip Venables’ & David Hoyle’s Illusions (2017). Terrific!
Week 5: authorship! Played them @lukejnickel’s MoonRiver32 and some Magnus Granberg. Discussion around improvisation, copyright, originality, recordings, sampling, notation, commodities… homework (because they hadn’t heard any!) - listen to the Beastie Boys
Week 6: microtonality! Discussion around historic, xenharmonic, JI tunings & more, and a deep dive into Catherine Lamb’s practice. (Honourable mentions for Wendy Carlos, Lou Harrison, Kyham Allami, G F Haas, & others)
Week 7 (following a few weeks off for auditions): today, we looked at new music for historical instruments aka my PhD. I played them some of my work-in-progress Renaissance Cornett and live electronics piece, and showed them the film of @LiamByrneVdG’s Inside Voices @V_and_A 👌🏻
Week 8: the penultimate session, today looking at diaspora and race. We explored @ElaineMitchener's Sweet Tooth as well as music, scholarship, and initiatives from Philip Ewell, Chineke!, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Abel Selaocoe, George Lewis, & others.
