Okay so people are submitting unsolicited pitches to serve as the special master in the Mar-a-Lago case and they're being docketed now. Some are bringing a lot of confidence!

"I'm only a retired businessman with an amateur's interest in history, politics, and the law but..."
"I do have a connection to your 'Southern District of Florida' as both of my parents are buried there"
"I am a retired person since age 39 who is currently a hobbyist in the film and music industry..."

Goals!
(I'm not sharing these docs at the moment because they include personal info about private citizens and people may not have realized their letters would be docketed)
Generally, this is not at all how this process works. We're waiting on a joint filing from Trump/DOJ to see who they propose for the job and whether they can agree on a name. The judge does have wide discretion to choose whomever she wants to serve as a special master
One of the pitches comes from someone who actually appears to be a lawyer with special master experience who acknowledges, "I know this is a long shot"

Now: We have dueling slates of proposed special master candidates from DOJ and Trump, but they don't officially disagree yet -- they say they'll update the court on their respective positions after the weekend s3.documentcloud.org/documents/2227…

More to come. Image
Trump isn't biting on DOJ's pitch for the judge to carve out docs with classified markings from the special master's review Image
Trump wants a 50/50 split of the special master's fees and expenses. DOJ says this was what Trump wanted, so he should foot the whole bill Image

A belated hello from Judge Amit Mehta's courtroom, where he sounds very ticked about Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes' effort to delay the upcoming trial so he can replace his lawyers, calling complaints about quality of representation "nonsense"
Mehta noted this is the first time Rhodes brought up any problems with his lawyers, and notes that he's seen Rhodes' current lawyers in action for a while and that they not only appeared competent, but had shown leadership/competence in helping other lawyers in the case

Hello on this overcast morning from the DC federal courthouse, where Judge Carl Nichols is set to hear arguments at 10am in former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows' challenge to Jan. 6 committee subpoenas
Fyi, the public line won't be on for this hearing and it's courtroom-only, which means no phones/computers (and no live tweets)
Hearing in Mark Meadows' challenge to Jan. 6 committee subpoenas is over, no ruling from the bench. Nichols pressed House counsel to explain why they're not asserting Speech or Debate Clause -- basically why they're not taking what seems like the easier path to dismissal. More tk

In its recent filing in FL in the fight over Trump's request for a special master re: Mar-a-Lago seized docs, DOJ noted they'd gotten permission to disclose info about grand jury subpoenas. Closing that particular loop, the DC federal court unsealed that order today:
The DC court also released DOJ's application to disclose that grand jury information: dcd.uscourts.gov/content/emerge…
Newly unsealed doc showing DOJ's request to disclose info about a Mar-a-Lago grand jury subpoena mostly repeats info we saw in the govt's filing in the FL special master case. One thing that seemed new -- feds spotted 50-55 boxes in the storage room during the June visit

A federal judge in Florida unsealed two new docs re: the search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago home:
- A status report from DOJ on the review of seized materials: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…
- A more detailed property inventory of what agents found/took: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…

More to come
The inventory list sheds new light on what was in each of the boxes found at Mar-a-Lago, and how docs with classified markings were mingled with miscellaneous other materials (books, press clippings, clothing/gifts)
On the newly unsealed property inventory of items seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago home, which sheds more light on the extent of classified materials FBI agents found and how they were mingled with other items. With @cstrohm and @eelarson:

Hello from Judge Amit Mehta's courtroom (I'm listening in, they're in-person), where arguments will begin soon on a motion in the contempt of Congress case against Trump adviser Peter Navarro -- Navarro is arguing DOJ owes him more discovery re: Jan. 6 committee, DOJ says nope
Here's Navarro's motion: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…

Mehta begins by having govt lawyer (I don't believe she was ID'd by name) explain what exactly they've produced to Navarro -- she says all materials provided by the Jan. 6 committee and the White House to DOJ that DOJ asked for re: Navarro
