I'm terrified by what we're seeing this summer, and by knowing how fast it's getting worse, and by how there's not really a ceiling on how bad it can get, and by how almost everyone still pretends business as usual can go on. Those who are not terrified don't have a clue.
What should you do? It boils down to two things:
1. Start your journey into climate activism. This mainly involves joining up with other activists, centering spiritually, TAKING RISKS.
2. Start your journey into burning less oil and gas.

Both helpful but #1 is #1 for a reason.
What should we do? End the fossil fuel industry (~80% of the cause of global heating), end the animal agriculture industry (~15%), and shift into #EmergencyMode as a society. "Net-zero by 2050" is WAY too slow. Your activism will help with this.

Some resources: Check out app at @EarthHeroOrg. Check out my book, it's online free at my website, or get it from the library. There are many other resources out there. Mainly though start talking to and meeting with other climate activists in your area ASAP. This is YOUR journey
I've thought about it a lot, and nobody can really tell anyone else how to be a climate activist. But at the same time there's LOTS of guidance out there, and the most important guidance - truly - is simply the friends you make along the way. But push yourself. And take risks
I read a few of the responses saying the first tweet could be about any number of things. To be clear, I did just have climate on my mind when I wrote it. In my view it eclipses everything else.

Once again: Warning about climate impacts is not "doomism." It's an expression of the urgent need to act in order to avoid as many impacts as possible. As a society we SHOULD be afraid. Fear leads to action. Fear is what provides that kick out of the status quo.
Because of fossil-fueled global heating, the status quo is extraordinarily dangerous in this moment. Global heating is a train and our society is still tied to the tracks. Everything is still geared to fossil fuels. We need the kick of fear to mobilize society to change systems
Doomism, however, is a real thing: It's when people say "we're screwed so don't even bother to try." And it's both unhelpful and incorrect. But many of those who are fighting for emergency-mode action - the very opposite of doomism - still get accused, incorrectly, of doomism.

On the brink of permanent, deep losses in Earth's habitability, but with an option to halt it by ending fossil fuels, you'd like to think humans would choose to halt it with great urgency. It's stupid rich people who are blocking this
The rich fossil fuel owners bribe politicians to preserve the fossil fuel status quo. Manchin is the record holder. But Schumer also has already taken $281,000 from the Mountain Valley Pipeline this cycle. Multiply this effect by every corrupt politician in the world
It is all happening right out in the open, although not reported loudly enough (partly because stupid rich people also own the major media outlets), and you should be absolutely enraged

Some personal news. My brilliant partner Sharon got a job at Duke (she works in environmental humanities), so we've relocated to the Durham area of North Carolina. I'm still working for NASA JPL, but now remote. I'm grateful I can support Sharon while continuing my work for JPL.
JPL was and still is my dream job. I'm sad for all we've left, but excited for new adventures and to meet new people in science, in the humanities, and in climate activism. I have chosen not to fly since 2012, so I feel close now to many great cities and people that jad felt far
The extreme heat, wildfire, aridification, and tree/forest death in CA and the West factored to some degree in our decision to move. It's much hotter, drier, more fiery than when we arrived. And all the dead trees, around LA and in the Sierra, broke my heart daily.

If you are interested in supporting or doing some civil disobedience for the Earth, we are meeting about this now and you are welcome to join!
Should have let you know sooner. It's super cool though. Seriously, come if you can and if you're thinking about getting in some good trouble. It's super helpful to meet other like-minded people, if you're thinking about civil disobedience

This horrific climate flooding in Pakistan yesterday wasn't even mentioned in the New York Times. It is caused by burning fossil fuels. The fossil fuel industry systematically lies and blocks action. Climate damage is irreversible. The media is failing humanity and the Earth
Worst of all: this is just the beginning. It all gets worse with each fraction of a degree of irreversible global heating. We must end the fossil fuel industry ASAP, no other sane choice
OK, good, here's the article from NYT that dropped after my tweet. Note though it doesn't mention that the fossil fuel industry is the cause, or how the industry systematically lies and blocks action, or how this will all get worse until we end fossil fuel

So many experienced, creative people want to put their talents to work for a livable planet. That's why I started @ClimateAd, the first ad agency for the Earth.

Now we're hiring a full-time Digital Producer!
Apply here:
climateadproject.org/digital-produc…
And pls share to get the word out.
We've been an all-volunteer team for the last two years. We incorporated as a non-profit, we learned a lot, we made some great videos, we raised some funds. But all-volunteer is challenging, plus we want to serve climate disobedience actions w media support more effectively
You can also sign up to volunteer at the website. We need writers, animators, videographers, editors, voice actors, back office, etc.
