Preparing with commissioners our energy package to address skyrocketing prices and provide relief to Europeans.

Focus of our work ahead of the College meeting in Strasbourg:

• Smart demand reduction

• Energy sector contributions to support vulnerable households and businesses

• Liquidity support of utilities

• Speed up push on #REPowerEU
On the cost of gas, we continue to work on answers adapted to a global market.

Objective: to ensure lower prices in Europe while guaranteeing security of supply.

Russia is manipulating our energy markets and we are confronted with astronomic prices.

So we will table measures to protect vulnerable consumers and businesses.

We have the economic strength, the political will and unity to keep the upper hand.

1) Smart Savings of Electricity

We need a strategy to flatten the peaks, which drive the price of electricity. 

We will propose a mandatory target for reducing electricity use at peak hours.
2) Cap on revenues of companies producing electricity with low costs.

Low carbon energy sources are making unexpected revenues.

Time for consumers to benefit from their low costs

We will propose to re-channel these unexpected profits to support vulnerable people and companies.

We need a new strategic thinking to defend the rules-based order. We must:
 
• Neutralise Russia’s blackmail power, strengthen our ability to act

• Support the democracies most exposed to foreign threats
 
• Use our economic might to preserve and expand the rules-based order
The skyrocketing electricity prices are now exposing the limitations of our current market design.
 
It was developed for different circumstances.
 
That’s why we are now working on an emergency intervention and a structural reform of the electricity market.

The bombs are still falling, but we know nothing is impossible to the people of Ukraine.
The country’s administration continues to function. 🇺🇦 is a digital frontrunner, w/ state-of-the art e-government. Its decentralisation is a success.

It has introduced courageous reforms, for example to reign in the oligarchs.

These are precious experiences for reconstruction.

Ukraine now has a clear European perspective and is a candidate to join the EU.

So today is a moment to celebrate this historic milestone.

A victory of determination and resolve.

And a victory for the whole movement that started eight years ago in the Maidan.
The reconstruction of the country and your European path and will go hand in hand.
 
Ukraine will be in the lead.

Massive investments will have to come.
 
But to maximize their impact and foster business confidence, they will have to be coupled with a new wave of reforms.

We agreed in Versailles to phase out our dependency on Russian gas, oil & coal as soon as possible.

But this requires a plan: This is #REPowerEU.

It has 4 pillars:

• Saving energy
• Diversifying away from 🇷🇺 fossil fuels
• Massive investment in renewable energy
• Financing
