I’m starting to see conspiracy theories about @HansMokeNiemann fester on Reddit and Youtube, so I will address what I have seen so far. A thread.
@HansMokeNiemann A Lance Armstrong comparison isn’t valid. Even back in 2004, there was a French book, L.A. Confidentiel, which presented strong circumstantial evidence of Armstrong’s doping. There have been no suspicions of Niemann cheating over the board until Magnus left the #SinquefieldCup 1/
@HansMokeNiemann People are bringing up a theory that Niemann does better in tournaments using DGT boards, but this data has not been replicated by others. See this tweet:
@HansMokeNiemann Niemann’s games have been scrutinized by anit-cheating expert Kenneth Regan, who found no foul play. His win over Carlsen one week ago has been scrutinized by many, including former world champion Karpov; no one has found evidence of computer play in Niemann’s victory. 3/
@HansMokeNiemann If Niemann is able to beat the reigning world champion as Black without cheating, he can beat many other players without having to resort to cheating. 4/
@HansMokeNiemann Some claim maybe there’s an undetectable cheating technology out there. If such a technology exists, it makes every single super grandmaster, not just Niemann, suspect. 5/
@HansMokeNiemann Now that @HansMokeNiemann has been cleared of cheating by the @STLChessClub, the accusations of him cheating are starting to go down a tin foil hat conspiracy theory rabbit hole. I expect better from chess players, who need to use logic and intelligence to play well. 6/6
@SusanPolgar@mostlykjeldsen@FIDE_chess@ECUonline@chessdom@chess24com@HansMokeNiemann Having had people I know fall down conspiracy theory ridden rabbit holes, I think it’s important to give push back when people start sharing very dubious information online. The Niemann allegations started with claiming Qg3 can’t possibly be a move a human can see here:
@SusanPolgar@mostlykjeldsen@FIDE_chess@ECUonline@chessdom@chess24com@HansMokeNiemann Once that was debunked, then it was that Hans rose in ratings quickly. Once that was debunked, so next the DGT theory. That’s getting debunked, so now we have new claims of questionable computer-like moves in 2-year-old games. Point being, is this really a quest for truth? 2/3
@SusanPolgar@mostlykjeldsen@FIDE_chess@ECUonline@chessdom@chess24com@HansMokeNiemann Or is this a case of people having a foregone conclusion and looking for any evidence to back up that conclusion? This is a little bit like the “Sandy Hook crisis actors” nonsense, and I don’t like seeing this kind of stuff in the chess community. 3/3
@SamGreszes@nytopinion David Shor was fired for engaging in non-bigoted political discourse which challenged the then prevalent left-wing narrative: nymag.com/intelligencer/… Point being, there are people who have been unfairly cancelled, and we need to stop equating mob justice with “accountability”.
After nearly six years, Slackware 15.0 is released. I remember learning the basics of Linux with Slackware, and it still holds a special place in my heart. slackware.com/announce/15.0.…
I played around with installing it. A full install is about 15 gigs in size. Installing all of the base (“A”) and Network (“N”) packages is about 2.7 gigs, and selecting packages by hand only got me down to 1.8 gigs or so.
That’s quite big with $20/year 10Gb space VPS accounts.
For home computers, 20 gigs is a drop in the bucket. For datacenter stuff, not so much. I would love to see a Slackware mode of “install nothing but required base and sshd” along with a 10 second (not 2 minute) LILO timeout.
I do not approve of guys using false romantic pretenses to get some wham-bam-thank-you-maam from women—to be honest, I personally will not have sex outside of a lifetime monogamous commitment—but to shame him for this is a form of slut shaming.
@olivertraldi To say it’s OK for a woman to be promiscuous but it’s not OK for this West Elm Caleb guy to be promiscuous is straight up a form of sexism.
But, then again, promiscuous sex is a type of idolatry in my personal code of moral standards.
@olivertraldi Here’s a pretty balanced full write up on the West End Caleb guy. archive.md/IWa2k Doxing someone and asking someone to be fired because they are promiscuous is taking it too far—this is GamerGate again, but this time the gender roles are reversed.
Sean O'Keefe “hasn't seen anything that convinces him that Webb was directly involved in demanding a purge of gay government officials or carrying it out”
Never mind that it was a different time—there simply is no direct evidence showing Webb ever did or say anything homophobic.
Keep in mind NASA had well over 200,000 employees in 1963 when the Clifford Norton firing happened. Too many for Webb to know about it.
When Google had only 5,000 employees in 2005, to compare, it was a really big deal that the president still signed off for every hire.
The only other evidence brought up is this: catalog.archives.gov/id/54538192 This is a memo written for Webb; there is no evidence Webb ever read or acknowledged the memo.
