what’s left of us.

A hoonki au in which rk and sh are exes, not officially, due to sh leaving without a word. Six years passed, rk received a message from someone he didn't really expect, sh. ImageImageImage
“Rk, microbio next, sabay tayo?” Sn asked.

“Huh? Ah, sige.” Mind still on the conversation he had with Sh last night, the younger just agreed to what the older said.

“Hoy! What are you thinking ba kasi? ‘Wag ka papasok sa class ni Dr. Borja like that, sisitahin ka no'n.”
“I’m sorry, just had something in my mind,” Rk apologized as they walked in hallway leading to their lecture room.

“I think you need sleep, ilang oras lang tulog mo?” Sn said.

“Siguro, I slept for thre—no, two hours.” He showed two fingers up.

“Need mo nga ng tulog.”

“Mr. Cortez, can you come with me to my office after this class?” Dr. Borja, their Microbiology teacher, asked.

“Sure, Doctora.” Rk gave a polite smile to the Doctor, and the latter just nodded at him.

“Sn, una ka na lang sa lib or if you'll go somewhere message me na lang.
I’ll message you na lang if it'll take a long time, para you won’t wait for me.” He gave an apologetic smile to the older because he promised that he’ll help Sn review.

“Okay lang, si Dr. Borja iyan, baka importante ipagagawa.” Sn tapped his shoulder.

“I’m sorry for making you wait, Mr. Cortez. The person we’re waiting for had an emergency on his way here,” the doctor apologized to him. “He’ll be a little late sa usapan.”

“It’s okay, Doctora. I don’t have a class na rin naman for the rest of the day,” Rk replied.
“May I go to the comfort room muna po?”

“Sure, Mr. Cortez.” The doctor gestured him to go, so he didn't waste his time anymore, and left the doctor's office.
correction: a year passed, why is that six? my keyboard is nagloloko, or I think I clicked the wrong suggestion.
Rk just washed his face on the sink to make the sleepiness go away, staying in Dr. Borja’s cold office made him a little drowsy.

On his way back to the office, he couldn’t help but feel nervous, yet he didn’t know what’s the reason behind it. Well, he’ll find out later.
Rk didn’t know if he was really sleepy and needed sleep, when he entered the doctor’s office. Because he could say he was seeing things—seeing fragments of people who’s not around anymore, they’re not dead, just simply gone.

“Oh, there you are, Mr. Cortez. Meet Mr. Perez.”
Oh god, he’s really here.

Rk blinked and pretended like he isn’t startled from seeing Sh, standing in front of him, alive and kicking, wearing the same uniform he’s wearing. When did Sh take up medicine? Because the last time he knew, the older was studying law.
“Mr. Cortez, are you okay?” Rk blinked again when he heard the doctor called his last name.

“I’m sorry, Doctora. Good afternoon, Mr. Perez,” he said. The mention of the older's surname soundedso insincere, it was, luckily the prof didn’t catch it.
“He’s transferee, a junior, and as the best student I have, treat him well. I’m assigning you to guide him, since he’s advancing my class.”

What if ayaw ko po? “I can do it, Doctora. You won’t be disappointed.” He gave the doctor an almost forced smile.

“Okay, you may go.”
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Rk asked Sh when they left the doctor’s office.

“To study?” Sh brows furrowed, confused. (read: acting confused)

“Well, the last time I checked, you are a fucking law student. So, what are you doing here?” Rk said, not happy about all of this
“Mag-aaral nga,” Sh replied.

“Ah, walang pinagbago. You’re such a headache, I'll assign another person, do as they say or lose your merits.” Rk’s gave him an uninterested look, and turned his back on Sh.

“No, wait. Ikaw iyong inassign ni Dr. Borja. That's unfair,” Sh said.
“Oh, wow! We're talking about fairness now, eh ikaw nga iyong nang-iwan ng walang pasabi. Saya mo naman kausap, Mr. Perez.” Rk faced Sh and rolled his eyes at him.

“About that, Ki, can we please talk? I just want to explain everything.”

“There’s nothing to talk about, Sh.”
“Please just one chance, Ki.” Sh begged to the younger.

“Be a good junior, Perez. Let’s see if you deserve it.”

“Rk, who’s that?” Sn asked, pointing to Sh who was following him like Rk is his owner.

“For cadaver purposes, just kidding, pinapahandle ni Dr. Borja.” Sn laughed at him.

“Gago ka baka ma-offend! Sorry sa friend ko.” Sn bowed at Sh.
“Na-offend ka ba, Perez?” Rk asked.

“Hindi naman,” Sh replied and gave him a smile.

“Good, now, let’s see if you are a good student.”
Sh was a good student, Rk wouldn't lie, but he is still confused on how the older get into med school when he took pre-law before, and his reasons for it.

“Uuwi sina Mom, she wanted to invite you raw for dinner,” Sh said while they were walking back to their building.
“Tell her she don't need to. We're not together na rin naman,” Rk replied. It was the truth, and they both need to live with it.

“Please, Mom wants to see you.”

“Fine, just this once. I don't want to be involved in your personal life anymore,” Rk said. He really wanted to say
no, but he didn't have the heart to reject Sh’s mother and make her sad.

“Thank you, Ki.” Sh let out a deep sigh and smiled at him, eyes shining like stars.

Tanginang mga mata iyan, bakit ba ganito trip mo sa 'kin, bro?
a break cos I didn't sleep that much. good morning, wala pa po tayo sa exciting part ><
Almost a week had past since Sh told Rk about the dinner with the older 's mom, and here's Rk losing his mind over goddamn clothes. He shouldn’t care—really shouldn’t, but the thought of looking presentable in front of someone whom he thought he’ll call as Mother by law
burned in the back of Rk’s mind, stirring butterflies and chaos in his system.

Maybe, Rk lied. He lied to himself about not loving the older anymore, because he's here, kahit anong pagkasira ang nagawa nito sa kaniya ay parang gusto niya pa rin itong tanggapin.
Pero kailangan niyang pigilan ang sarili niya, wala ng sila, hindi niya rin alam ang mga rason kung bakit siya nito iniwan. At ang mga rasong ayaw niyang pakinggan at pilit na tinatakasan. Because he’d not know how to handle it, pakiramdam niya ay mas lalo siyang masisira nito.
