.@PeterSinger is 100% right about the following: If you deny that this prenatal child is a member of moral community, then you must deny that neonatal children are members of the moral community. The reproductive right to abortion implies the reproductive right to infanticide. Image
Significantly, this was the view of the ancient pagans who practiced both abortion and infanticide in order to control reproduction. The ancient Christians who lived among them opposed the culture of both abortion and infanticide in defending radical human dignity and equality.
Also significant is the fact that, as our own Western culture de-Christianizes, we are returning to the idea that the right to abortion implies the right to infanticide. We kill infants, (mostly) not by action, but by omission. I write about that here. thepublicdiscourse.com/2022/04/81840/
Yes, there are ways to think about abortion as the right to bodily autonomy, not reproductive autonomy. (Thanks in part to the infamous violinist thought experiment.) But the move to aiming at the death of children after birth reveals that this (mostly) isn't what is going on.
Yes, we need to be better as pro-life movements making it clear that we will always save the life of the mother if that's what she wants, including in cases where there is a gray area. Yes, we need to make sure women and families are supported if they choose life. Though it is...
...worth noting corporations paying for women to travel to have abortions, and not supporting women who choose life, are definitely not "pro-choice." nbcdfw.com/news/business/… Happily, the pro-life movements are becoming more and more skeptical of how much capital loves abortion.
There is nothing contradictory about pursuing prenatal justice for a 15 week-old prenatal human being and pursuing justice for her mother. Ireland (before recent events), Chile and Poland have banned almost all abortion and have had amazing outcomes for women. Indeed, consider...
...Poland has one of the strictest abortion laws in Europe while also having THE LOWEST MATERNAL MORTALITY in all of Europe. nytimes.com/2022/07/09/opi… Let us resist the utterly false narrative which diabolically pits mothers against their children. Not just because it is so...
...destructive for women who years later resent being coerced (structurally, if not physically via intimate partner violence) into having an abortion, but also because it redistributes the very real oppression so many women face. We can #resistthrowawayculture and choose both. Image

Seeing surprise and even anger from fellow pro-lifers about the results from Kansas last night. On the one hand, this reaction makes good sense. Kansans are very pro-life and in order for their views to be reflected in law the referendum had to pass. It failed, 59-41.

THREAD
Now Kanas will become a bastion of abortion extremism, including welcoming abortion tourism from other states. Virtually no resident wants that. Furthermore, didn't Louisiana just pass a similar measure, 61 percent to 38 percent? cnn.com/2020/11/04/pol… This all seems strange.
It seems less strange, however, if one keeps in mind that our most motivated opponents across the country have been preparing (and especially fundraising) for last night since ABC was confirmed. (Some since Kavanagh was confirmed.) $$$$ played a huge role: catholicnewsagency.com/amp/news/25192…

So, yeah, we're all kind of jaded and cynical about the abortion debate, right? So many folks will say almost anything to advance their narrative. But the Washington Post publishing the story of a Black pro-life activist **as if she supports abortion rights** takes the cake. 1/
Elaine Riddick was the victim of sexual violence and of the violence of forced sterilization. No wonder she became a passionate pro-life activist, telling her story at anti-abortion events all over the country. She hates the violence of abortion too. indyweek.com/news/eugenics-… 2/
So the @washingtonpost--in covering this story of, again, a Black woman--naturally tried to erase this central part of who she is by framing the story (totally dishonestly) as if she supports Roe and abortion rights! Don't believe me? Take a look at this remarkable conclusion. 3/

Some professional news! Yesterday I accepted a tenured, full professor position with the @Creighton School of Medicine! My family and I will stay in NJ, but I’ll fly about once a month to teach ethics to M1 and M2 students in their brand-new medical school in Phoenix, Arizona. 1/ Image
Creighton SOM was invited, in particular, by the underserved Catholic Latino community there to build this new institution. catholicsun.org/2021/09/14/cre… In addition to those courses, I’ll teach a few online as well, for a total of 80 percent of my time. 2/
I'm excited to be part of a school of medicine that has so much going for it: also building a new medical center on their main Omaha campus. omaha.com/lifestyles/hea… In a related story, it is a school which cares deeply about ethics, humanities, and Jesuit-Catholic identity. 3/

Really important thread here; one which gets to the heart of an issue which has been at the center for my research of late: what is actually going on with the dead donor rule and transplantation of vital organs. I think what this thread reveals is the dead donor rule... 1/
...really isn't followed. And, in related story, the fiction that a living human body with a (mostly?) dead brain is an actually dead human being is imploding. As Dr. Ely suggests, the demand for organs trumps other considerations. (And I say this as an organ donor myself!) 2/
From the very beginning, the troubling switch from a cardio-pulmonary definition of death to a neurological one was driven--not by arguments and evidence--but by the need for a way to get more organs. This is just the latest slide in that direction, and wholly unsurprising. 3/

Think the case for masking kids at schools is a no-brainer? I encourage you read this from @NYMag which came out last week Friday: nymag.com/intelligencer/… Full of very important insights...especially if you care more about facts than about ideology. Some quotes in thread below.
"Distancing, hybrid models, classroom barriers, HEPA filters, and, most notably, requiring student masking were each found to not have a statistically significant benefit. In other words, these measures could not be said to be effective."
"Many of America’s peer nations around the world — including the U.K., Ireland, all of Scandinavia, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy — have exempted kids, with varying age cutoffs, from wearing masks in classrooms."

Remember @emmaogreen's (deeply disturbing) story about a Catholic nurse with a longstanding objection (which was recorded with her Medical Center) to participating in abortion who was tricked into participating in one? theatlantic.com/politics/archi…

Well, there's new developments. 1/
Despite all the steps the nurse took, she was scheduled for what she was told was a procedure following a miscarriage...which was actually an elective abortion. According to the nurse, the attending physician said, “don’t hate me” once she became aware of how she was tricked. 2/
The previous administration, first through the HHS Office of Civil Rights and then the DOJ, moved to hold the Medical Center accountable for its blatant civil rights violation.

Can you imagine being pro-life and *being forced to participate in an abortion*? What utter horror. 3/
