New thread for memes & pop culture references in Nona the Ninth! Spoiler warning for the entire book, but images will be blurred. This is a collaborative effort between me + others. If you find more, please DM me! 🖤💀 #ntnspoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
Starting with my fave:
Couldn’t figure out why this phrase and specific # sounded so familiar my first read. It’s a fucking meme, born out of the CommunismKills tumblr. 🤣
This is another one that made me freaking YELL when someone else that read the ARC pointed it out. The “messengers.” 🤣 #NtNSpoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
Good cop/bad cop is an ancient TV Trope. But “Sorry Cop” is apparently a level of Cop you can earn points to become in the game Disco Elysium. Which Tamsyn has admitted to enjoying. Thanks @yurizilla for this one! 🖤 #NtNSpoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
This one is cute. One of Pyrrha’s nicknames for Nona is Hairy Maclary. Hairy is a dog, and the title character in a series of New Zealand based children’s books. #NtNSpoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
There are a few different potential sources for the name "We Suffer." But one I found interesting, is that it's also a DUNE reference. And we all know Tamsyn was highly influenced by DUNE: #ntnspoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
The scene where Cam reads Nona “Dear Aunty” advice column letters is a nod to an infamous tweet and reddit copypasta, frequently posted in r/AmITheAngel. #NtNSpoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
Something I discovered when I first read the ARC: all of the BoE cell names come from ancient extinct Earth cities. #NtNSpoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
Also the BoE codenames for Pyrrha, Mercymorn, Augustine, and Cytherea are all either named after mythical swords & shields, or the person who wielded them. Tweet 1/2 #NtNSpoilers#NonaTheNinthSpoilers
Another BoE related reference! The designation of “wing commander” is likely a reference to the popular 1990’s video game by the same name. Thanks @seserakh for sending this in!

Today I would like to discuss one of the biggest changes in the early digital Nona ARC vs. the published edition. The PAUL scene: because it is completely different!!! And has series-wide *implications* 💀
Originally, it was Kiriona who approached Ianthe-Babs. And the scene is much shorter. The later version, it’s Paul. Who now also has an extended conversation with Ianthe with pretty interesting implications about death, lyctorhood, & potential future plot lines. 👀 #ntnspoilers
The final version also lost a humorous comment from We Suffer.
It’s also worth noting part of Paul’s speech = a reference to “The Nightingale and the Rose,” from Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince and Other Tales.” Thanks to @DrunkLiS for pointing that out! 🖤#NtNSpoilers
