Our already record-high energy bills are rising yet again and will continue to be unaffordable for millions of us. Under Truss's 'energy price guarantee', the average bill will rise to £2,500 per year — 96% higher than last winter. 🧵 \1
We need to keep up the pressure.
Don't Pay is calling for a national day of action on Saturday 1st October - let's get out on the streets in our communities and keep building the strike! \2
Local Don't Pay groups across the country will be putting on events and actions in the build up to, and on 1st October itself. This could be community stalls in your town centre, banner drops, demonstrations, or whatever else you can come up with. \3
You don't need permission to put on an event - feel free to go ahead and make things happen!
And remember, Don't Pay is a grassroots movement demanding a fair price for energy for everyone. We’re building our leverage and pressure on the government through a mass energy bills non-payment campaign — which we’ll only call once 1 million pledge to strike. \5
By pledging to strike, together we're showing the government we refuse to pay extortionately high energy bills and refuse to uphold a broken system that lets thousands freeze while energy companies make billions in profits. \6
We've now forced the government to step in ahead to avert the catastrophic 80% price hike on 1 October. Yet our bills will still have doubled, millions will still be unable to pay and our taxes will bankroll £170,000,000 in excess profits for energy companies. \7
We need to keep organising in our local communities and signing up people to pledge to strike. Together, we'll make sure no one goes cold or hungry this winter.
See you on the streets on 1st October! \8

1️⃣ Reverse the energy price cap to April 2021 level
The energy price cap at 2021 levels was unaffordable for millions already, but this demand is to respond to the immediate emergency. We have demands to bring prices down further and on a sustainable basis. \2
2️⃣ End all enforcement of pre-payment meters
Pre-payment meters mean the poorest in society pay the most for their energy and are automatically cut off if they cannot afford it. This simply cannot continue and these devices and the higher tariff paid by the poorest must be.. \3
Over 31,000 of you have joined as organisers and over 4,000 of you have joined around 180 Don't Pay Groups formed off your postcode area e.g. Don't Pay L8 (Liverpool)
🔥 We’re building a mass non-payment strike of energy bills starting on Oct 1st. Join us in building the strike! \1
💰 Energy suppliers will be increasing prices by a whopping 65% on Oct 1, with average prices topping £3,400 a year (triple from 2021). We cannot afford to let this happen, it will push 1 in 3 of us into fuel poverty this winter. \2
💪 That's why we're building the UK's biggest mass non-payment campaign since the Poll Tax. \3
According to Chaitanya Kumar of @NEF "a mass refusal to pay energy bills would either force the Government to intervene or prompt energy companies to pressure Ofgem into raising the price cap faster than expected." 🧵 \1
It would only take 6,000 taxpayers withholding energy bills for a “ripple effect” to be felt by energy providers, Mr Kumar said.
“The balance sheets of these companies were already quite poor and could get worse,” he added. \2
“I’d imagine suppliers’ accounts would start haemorrhaging quite a bit. Ofgem increased the price cap primarily to protect suppliers, so if people just stopped paying, the Government would have to intervene.”
