OK, two future U.S. Senators in this 1962 photo—who are they?
Yup, Pierre Salinger was appointed to vacant US Senate seat from California of late Clair Engel in August 1964, lost November election to George Murphy, resigned that December.
Salinger for US Senator ‘64—whom could he be calling?
How did you learn in 2001 about the attacks of 9/11 and how did you personally react to the news?
I remember driving down Connecticut Avenue on September 11, 2001, and seeing swarms of anxious people rushing away from the area of Lafayette Park, almost like a scene from "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
After driving past Pentagon, with its roof still in flame, had the honor of speaking on @PBS with Jim Lehrer and friends on evening of September 11, 2001. We were all in state of near-shock.
Forgive my Chicago chauvinism but Queen came to Chicago in 1959 and rode in open car with legendary old Mayor Daley (and no, I am not old enough to have seen this):
Dress code suggestions for guests at Conrad Hilton banquet thrown by old Mayor Daley in Chicago for Queen Elizabeth II, 1959:
"Black or décolleté dress" was OK for ladies, but Queen preferred female diners to also wear "long gloves":
At Mayor Daley's 1959 banquet in Chicago, the Queen was served "Prime Chicago Filet Mignon" and "International Rapids Salad." But 1959 was before the era of Chicago deep dish pizza.
Today in 1974, Gerald Ford unconditionally pardoned ex-President Nixon before Nixon was even indicted.
Although well-intentioned, this encouraged later Presidents (one in particular) to believe they are above the law.
Thus with historical hindsight, Ford made a bad decision.
After Ford pardoned him (today 1974), Nixon spent the last twenty years of his life complaining that he was unfairly driven from the Presidency.
Before handing Nixon a pardon (today 1974), Ford did not even make Nixon sign an airtight confession of guilt.
