Post the fact-check by my colleague @AbhishekSay about how mainstream media orgs including @IndiaToday wrongly claimed that the St George's Cross in the Indian Navy's flag was re-introduced during UPA, @ShivAroor put out a clarification, first on Twitter, and later on TV. 1/n
In this televised clarification, @ShivAroor suggested that the fact that he didn't brazen this out is evidence of his fairness and non-partisanship as a journalist. 2/n
The #AltNewsFactCheck was published on Sep 15, 2 weeks after the claim was first televised by @IndiaToday on Aug 30. The reason for the delay was because @AbhishekSay patiently watched broadcasts of multiple news channels to determine who all put out the false claim. 3/n
Additionally, since we did not want to rely purely on media reports, @AbhishekSay painstakingly went through Rajya Sabha QnAs to find the relevant references.
4/n
However, the information that the St George's Cross wasn't re-introduced by UPA Government has been out in the public domain for a while now, with @IndiaToday's own fact-checking unit having put out a story on September 5th. 5/n
On Sep 2, Congress's @dubeyamitabh tagged @gauravcsawant informing him that the verbatim claims by BJP that @IndiaToday was broadcasting were false, and should have been fact-checked.
If this is not brazening out, then what sort of quality control does @IndiaToday have that four of its most senior anchors with each having over 15-20 years of experience put out the same false claim, and the same doesn't get corrected for over 2 weeks?
7/n
How does it happen that a fact-check published by @IndiaToday itself, albeit without mentioning that their own anchors had put out the misinformation, doesn't get relayed to the members of the same organisation?

The claim that @zoo_bear put out an edited video is completely false, and it is a lie propagated by @NupurSharmaBJP. Zubair put an unedited clip of the relevant part of the video where Nupur Sharma uses derogatory/insulting language on live TV. 1/n
Times Now has now changed the status of the video on their YouTube channel to private. However, we downloaded the entire 33-minute video before it could be made private and the relevant clip can be seen in the next tweet. 2/n
In this clip, @navikakumar first suggests that a couplet was sarcasm against Hinduism, and based on an unknown book of the law, claims that panellists cannot refer to the disputed structure as 'fountain', and asks @NupurSharmaBJP to comment on it. 3/n
THREAD: For months now, certain members and sympathisers of Congress have been running propaganda against @AltNews claiming that we're pro-AAP. Till now, we have avoided responding to these allegations because they're so utterly ridiculous. 1/
However, since there's no letting up of this collective targeting, it is necessary to respond. 2/
Firstly, we are not here in service of any political party or ideology, the work we have done over the past five years speaks for itself. 3/
Alt News is starting a new initiative against hate speech and we are calling it UnHate. UnHate can be followed on Twitter at @unhate_in.

For now, we’ll be documenting objectionable speech through a Twitter account. However, we will soon launch a portal that will facilitate documenting all forms of objectionable speech made by public and political personalities as well as social media influencers.
[2/5]
The need for one such initiative was felt because of the rampant increase in hate speech and organised disinformation in the online as well as the offline world, and the failure of tech platforms to offload objectionable speech from their platforms.
It is unlikely that PM had a teleprompter gaffe. If you look at the WEF version of the recording of his speech, someone in the background says, "Sir aap unse ek baar pooche ki sab jud gaye kya". This portion is not clear in the video live-streamed on PM's YouTube channel.

After this, the PM questions if he and the interpreter can be heard properly, to which Klaus Schwab responds stating that he can. However, Schwab interrupts the PM's speech to give a brief introduction.
2/n
The PM repeats the whole speech again. The World Economic Forum (WEF) version of the recording can be seen on their YouTube channel. The address starts at 8:37.
