Overall, 177 MEPs from 6 out of the 7 political groups support amendments for a stronger ban on remote biometric identification in the AI Act proposal 💪 🎉
📍24 MEPs tabled a full and unequivocal ban on all types of remote biometric identification (RBI) in publicly-accessible spaces in the #AIAct IMCO-LIBE report.
📍18 MEPs supported a ban on real-time RBI in publicly-accessible spaces, by all actors, & without exceptions.
📍Dozens of MEPs proposed 2 new & important bans prohibiting the police from using private biometric databases, and creating biometric databases through mass/untargeted methods such as online scraping or the mass scraping of CCTV footage.
We are very proud of the commitment of #ReclaimYourFace campaigners and advocates who met with MEPs and organised actions in the weeks and months preceding the amendments and made this possible 👏🏆
The results show a clear political will for a stronger ban on biometric mass surveillance, taking us a step closer to a genuine EU ban on these chilling practices 👏
But the fight is still far from over, here’s a reminder of the #AIAct negotiation process. reclaimyourface.eu/how-can-you-in…
The amendments to the initial IMCO-LIBE report will create a compromise text for the official opinion of the @Europarl_EN.
The Parliament will have to accept the text as its opinion through an important vote.
