when will people have a humanist approach to AI discourse. so much of the discourse is spectacularly bad about assuming capitalism as the default and that AI is equally capable of representing all creatives
“what does humanism, a philosophy, have to do with artificial intelligence creating art”
EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!
if your argument is “AI will take jobs from creatives,” you have already made a capitalist zero-sum assumption
a writer is still a writer when they are not writing. an artist is still an artist when they are not making art. focusing solely on output mischaracterizes and misunderstands the entire process. typical of capitalism to focus on tangible capital at the expense of people
it is also so typical for people to forget that translators (1) exist, and (2) still have jobs despite google translate. please type “from:sqiouyilu #JobSecurity” into the twitter search bar and enjoy
also, none of this alarmist panicking *south park voice* “THEY TOOK OUR JEEEERBS!!!!” factors into consideration the fact that AI art also reduces barriers to entry and makes it possible for more people to create art, and so many fucking people want art to be exclusionary
in the early 2000s it was “digital art isn’t real art” (what does digital do? eliminates need for large studio space, eliminates constant need to replenish expensive supplies, makes sharing art faithfully to the work a lot easier, tutorials are easier to follow with same tools)
nowadays it’s “AI is gonna take out jobs” or “AI art isn’t real art and it’s cheating even if humans paint over it” and I’m just like… do y’all think photomanipulation isn’t real art either, even though CGI is what powers every damn movie these days
I use “zero sum” here to mean either/or and the concept that there is limited capacity in any creative space
it’s bullshit and false, you achieve so much more and welcome so many more people when you say “and” instead of “or” and assume space is unlimited
space is unlimited. demand is unlimited. supply is unlimited. imagination should be unlimited but is apparently in very limited supply!!!!
when people focus on making things proprietary & having trade secrets as a way to secure their position in a space, all that reveals to me is that they are actually replaceable; if the only thing that distinguishes you is an object that anyone could acquire, you’re not special
the way to secure your position in a space, imo, is to freely share your knowledge & thereby prove that you’re indispensable, bc it’s your experience & expertise that make you stand out, and people having all the access to your tools and yet not being you is proof of concept
a good teacher is absolutely irreplaceable. but hey, the US abysmally devalues teachers too, so I’m not surprised USians don’t understand this basic shit

thinking about it and the distinction between “you fucked up” / “you’ve fucked up” and “you done fucked up” is an aspect distinction, “done” is doing the same work of 了 here and the full semantics cannot be adequately conveyed without it
past tense alone implies that the action is complete, but can’t by itself make completion explicit
I can’t really explain why I’ve been drawn to southern US englishes, like, my whole life, but the varieties in the southeast and the overlap in features with AAVE create an aspect system in english that more neatly overlaps with my chinese mental grammar than standard english
narratives powered by christian ethical frameworks: don’t do revenge. forgive their sin
narratives powered by taoist ethical frameworks: you done fucked up & created an imbalance. I’m just here to restore equilibrium. don’t want vengeance? don’t fuck shit up in the first place
driving 41 miles through traffic to get from work to my tattoo removal appointment, bc the nurse is that good
sorry, I think 41 miles was the crow flight estimate, the actual route is giving me 56 miles
leaving now, at 3, for a 5:30 appointment, even though my maps estimate says I’ll arrive around 4:20 (blaze it), because this is los angeles, let’s see when I actually get there 👋🏻
ultimately I really don’t give a shit about saying the “right” or “wrong” thing, I care about saying something that could give someone light in a dark time
we almost lost me to bad discourse because I genuinely believed there was justified reason for me being gone from this earth and attempted to follow through, I just don’t want that to happen to others
and as always, to dissuade contagion and encourage everyone and myself to get help when we need it: findahelpline.com
this!! people who are happy to use a google translated version aren’t my clients anyway, but it’s simultaneously a great thing that google translate has created more language access by bridging gaps when people can’t, for whatever reason, hire a human
interest in & availability of genre translations have increased alongside google translate’s development; more linguistic access means more interest in the material, period. AI live-translation is imperfect but means I can do things like read the info on my korean hair dye box
without live translation software I would probably shy away more from buying products that are packaged in languages I can’t read because I wouldn’t have the full info, but now that concern is virtually gone, creating a net increase in diversity of options available to me
