September 20 marks #NationalVoterRegistrationDay, a day to remind yourself and others in your life who might not be registered to vote to do so now.
According to 2020 U.S. Census data, up to 1 in 4 Americans who could be registered to vote aren’t.
The midterm elections are less than 50 days away, and a slew of high-profile issues, such as abortion protections and LGBTQ+ rights, will be affected by which party controls Congress, as well as state legislatures and governors’ mansions, in 2023.
Megan Piphus Peace is making history as the first Black woman puppeteer on ‘Sesame Street.’
In an interview with the Washington Post, the 29-year-old said she has been a longtime lover of puppets, ever since she began watching ‘Sesame Street’ herself as a toddler.
She eventually learned how to do ventriloquism herself, performing as a puppeteer while working a day job in real estate development. In 2021, she became a cast member for the show, maneuvering and voicing the character Gabrielle.
Speaking to the New York Times following the release of Adnan Syed, 'Serial' host Sarah Koenig said she was ‘shocked’ that the 41-year-old’s murder conviction had been vacated.
‘I did not see this coming at all. One of the first things I did was call Adnan’s brother and then his mother — they told me they didn’t know either. The prosecutors who filed the motion to release him kept it pretty tight, it seems,’ Koenig said.
Koenig was in the courtroom Monday when a Maryland judge vacated Syed’s conviction, allowing him to walk free for the first time in 23 years.
Nonprofit think tank Carbon Tracker launched the Global Registry of Fossil Fuels on September 19. The database includes production and emissions data from 75% of global fossil fuel reserves.
While there has been similar fossil fuel data made public on demand, this is the first time this much data showing global reserves has been made available to the public.
The data covers 50,000 oil, gas, and coal operations across 89 countries.
The founder of Carbon Tracker, Mark Campanale, told the Associated Press that this type of data is important for the public to know and gives people a chance to challenge projects.
Halle Bailey says Rob Marshall, director of the upcoming live-action ‘The Little Mermaid’ remake, supported her turn as Ariel by allowing her to bring herself into the way the iconic Disney character was depicted on screen.
'With Rob, he's so amazing and just saying, 'I see you and I want to bring you into the character,'' Bailey told Entertainment Weekly at California’s D23 Expo.
'So it was a beautiful thing. My hair, for example — incorporating my locs into the red hair was something that was really special to me. The outfit, the fins, everything. It's just amazing. I'm just grateful that I've been able to take the essence of me and mix the two.'
On Monday, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it would sell up to 10 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in November.
The sale is aimed at helping lower energy costs for Americans after Russia’s war in Ukraine disrupted supply chains.
The sale stems from President Joe Biden’s March announcement that authorized the DOE to release up to 180 million barrels from the SPR. The 10 million barrels set to be released in November will bring the total number of barrels released to 165 million.
A new study published in the journal Environmental Research Communications suggests that spraying aerosol particles into the atmosphere could block sunlight, potentially reversing ice loss and subsequently cooling the north and south poles.
The project would require approx 175,000 flights every year to conduct stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI), costing an estimated $11.4 billion (£10 billion).
Wake Smith, the Yale University researcher who led the study, said the plan is more of a climate Band-Aid, since it doesn’t address the root cause of the crisis — only a symptom.
