NEW Investigation by FA and @alhaq_org's FAI Unit into the 11 May extrajudicial killing of Shireen Abu Akleh uses previously unseen footage provided by @AJArabic and advanced spatial and audio analysis to reveal conclusive evidence. Full investigation: bit.ly/3SiDZLh 1/9
#1. Shireen and her colleagues were clearly identifiable as press. Our field of vision analysis simulating the view from the IOF marksman's rifle scope both optically and digitally shows the legibility of the journalists' 'PRESS' vests as they were targeted. 2/9
#2. Shireen and her colleagues were deliberately and repeatedly targeted. Our analysis of the shots' impact points confirms their close proximity to one another, indicating precise and careful aim. All shots were fired above the shoulders, revealing an intent to kill. 3/9
Our audio analysis confirms that the IOF fired 16 individual shots over 3 distinct rounds of shooting at Shireen, her colleagues, and a civilian trying to provide medical aid. 4/9
#3. Visual analysis, sound analysis, and witness testimony all confirm that there were NO other persons present between the journalists and the convoy of military vehicles at the time of the incident. 5/9
The shots fired at Shireen and her colleagues came from a hole in the side of an armoured military vehicle where the marksman sat protected and at a distance. 6/9
No other shots in any of the footage analysed came from the vicinity of the journalists. The only shots fired in the 3 minutes preceding the shooting of Shireen came from the IOF’s position, confirming there was no exchange of fire. 7/9
#4. Our video, audio, and spatial analysis ALL confirm that while attempting to provide aid to Shireen, a civilian on scene was shot at each time he attempted to reach her & entered the line of sight/fire of the shooter. Shireen was thus deliberately denied medical attention. 8/9
This investigation by FA and @alhaq_org is the first to employ a precise digital reconstruction of the incident. Our findings will be an addendum to a complaint to the @IntlCrimCourt submitted by Shireen's family and colleagues this morning (20 September) at the Hague. 9/9

Today we publish our latest, months-long investigation with @counterinv, an interactive cartographic platform that archives, verifies and maps over 1000 ‘drift-backs’ in the Aegean Sea: aegean.forensic-architecture.org
‘Drift-backs’ are a new mode of expulsion at the edge of the EU that weaponises the geography of the Aegean to deny asylum seekers access to safety. Intercepted in GR waters and islands by @HCoastGuard, they are left adrift on life rafts, back to Turkey.

vimeo.com/730006259
To evidence this practice, we collected, verified, timestamped and geolocated thousands of images, videos, and GPS locations sent by asylum seekers to monitors like @alarm_phone and @ABoatReport, or taken by the Turkish CG during their ‘rescue’ operations.

FA is pleased to announce its first collaborative investigation with @CST_echo. Just over 3 months since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we present a detailed analysis of one of the first symbolically significant events of the war, the Russian missile strike on the Kyiv TV tower.
Russia's strike on the Kyiv TV tower was not particularly effective militarily—but the significance of targeting the capital city’s main television and radio tower cannot be underestimated in a war as much about control over narrative as over land and the people inhabiting it.
The missiles targeting the TV tower also landed on Babyn Yar, the site of one of the worst massacres of the Holocaust—ironic given the oft-invoked Russian talking point about the ‘de-Nazification’ of Ukraine as justification for the invasion.

Our latest investigation + our first ‘open source archaeology’, documents the ancient city of Anthedon near Al-Shati camp in Gaza—Palestinian heritage under threat from coastal erosion, repeated bombings & the humanitarian disaster of Israeli occupation. forensic-architecture.org/investigation/…
Excavations at the site throughout the 90s unearthed Iron Age walls, Achaemenid period houses, Roman villas & fountain, a key Greco-Roman port city, & a Byzantine cemetery. The remnants were reburied by archaeologists for their protection as the occupation intensified in the 00s.
Our 'open source archaeology’ digitally reconstructs past & present layers of the site, using social media videos, satellite images, drone footage by @AinMedia, site visits, & archaeological reports & surveys.

1/ In 2020, Parvin, a young woman from Iran, crossed the Greek-Turkish border 7 times; 6 times across the Evros/Meriç river and once over the Aegean Sea. She was arrested and pushed back 6 times. We worked w/ @ECCHRBerlin, @rights360 and Parvin to reconstruct her journey.
2/ Parvin recorded her first 3 crossings through photos, videos, audio messages & live location sharing. Unprecedentedly, she was able to record videos from inside Greek border guard stations that revealed the cell interiors & conditions of detention, all previously undocumented.
3/ Analysing this evidence, we found that she was held in four Greek Border Guard stations: Neo Cheimonio BGS, Iasmos BGS, Tychero BGS, and Soufli BGS, twice.

FA returns to @hkw_berlin today to launch our new Berlin-based sister agency, FORENSIS, and the Investigative Commons, a new community of practice founded on the work of FA and our partners including @ECCHRBerlin, Praxis Films, @bellingcat, @amnesty, @mnemonicorg, among others
Investigative Commons serves as both the title of a landmark exhibition at @hkw_berlin and the name of a pioneering new model for collaborative counter-investigations operating across multiple forums: courts, citizens’ tribunals, cultural institutions and media platforms
With the rise of neo-fascist 'post-truth' epistemology, societies have clung to traditional pillars of power-knowledge—state institutions, legal systems, the police. But how should civil society react when these same institutions are guilty of crimes, state-terror & cover-ups?
