As a human rights lawyer I've represented women seeking justice my entire career.
As Iranian women protest Iran's hijab enforcement—while the 'morality police' murder Mahsa Amini—I want to post this thread about Hijab in Islam. I hope every guy (esp in Iran) reads this.
/1
People often conflate "Hijab" & "headscarf." Wearing the headscarf is one form of Hijab, but men often forget that Hijab is much more.
Accordingly, when addressing Hijab, the Qur'an does not address women first. It addresses men first.
What? Men observe hijab? Since when?
/2
Well, since always. The primary responsibility of observing Hijab is not on women — it is on men. It's critical to understand this point.
How must men observe Hijab? Men are commanded to not stare at women & to not be promiscuous. The Qur'an commands men to observe modesty.
/3
For example, Qur'an 24:31 rebukes forced laws on women that say "Women must cover otherwise men are distracted." This verse destroys rape culture.
The Qur'an commands men,"Don't stare at women," demolishing absurd complaints that "what she's wearing is too provocative," etc
/4
Men have an obligation to God & to women to observe Hijab. Simply—if a guy chooses to accept Islam, Islam says he must observe Hijab
Thus Prophet Muhammad(sa) rebuked men, "Be chaste yourselves & women will be chaste as well,"—again putting the primary burden of Hijab on men
/5
In a famous incident Prophet Muhammad (sa) saw a companion staring at a woman who was not wearing a head scarf. Rather than scold the woman Muhammad (sa) admonished his companion to stop staring as it was rude & unIslamic—again placing the primary burden of Hijab on men.
/6
Once the Qur'an & Prophet thoroughly command men to observe Hijab by being modest, not staring, & reforming themselves—then the Qur'an addresses women
Now, many men magically & suddenly discover the concept of Hijab for women—ignoring the primary burden first placed on men🤦🏽♂️
/7
And you end up with draconian regimes like Iran, where for some reason men think they can simply force women to observe Hijab.
No. Such. Permission. Exists. To. Force. Hijab. On. Women. In. Islam.
None. Nada. Zip. Cero. صفر Zero in whatever language you speak. Zero!
/8
But as His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad (aba) reminds men who force Hijab on women—don't, and instead control yourself.
/9
Hijab is a critically important Islamic teaching. No one denies this. But it seems too many men forget it applies to us FIRST and we should worry about ourselves.
So that's my thread on Hijab in Islam. To learn how Hijab applies to Muslim women—ask Muslim women.
Finally...
/10
If Iran actually wanted to empower women, they'd ensure women have self-determination. Such truth is grounded both in human nature and Islamic history
The Prophet's wife Khadija was a CEO. His wife Ayesha was the premier jurist. Muslim women were warriors, poets, & scholars
/11
I mourn Mahsa Amini's murder, and stand in solidarity with Iranian woman fighting for the most basic human right to self determination & free thought.
As Qur'an 420 declares, "It is unlawful to inherit women against their will."
Iran must stop its oppression of women.

I’m celebrating my 30 year anniversary of becoming a US Citizen. I love my country & I demand a more perfect Union
Per the great James Baldwin, “I love America more than any other country in the world &—exactly for this reason—I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”
Growing up in Section 8, on food stamps, & working since I was 15, I experienced for a decade the struggle that is every day for tens of millions of Americans.
I've experienced our country's ugly side—the death threats & xenophobia for being a Muslim immigrant of color, AND
/2
I've also seen the immense love, compassion, & justice of my fellow Americans. I've seen amazing teachers teach me & now teach my children. I've seen amazing public servants in law enforcement, elected office, & non-profit selflessly sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

1. It isn't a myth that Black people are still impacted by white supremacy. Currently, the median white family's wealth is $147K while the median Black family's wealth is $3600. jstor.org/stable/pdf/res…
Today I turn 40-years-old. I'm incredibly blessed, & find myself thinking what I would tell my 20-year-old self if I could go back in time and talk to him?
So if you'll indulge me, a short thread on the "always do" and "never do" things I'd tell my younger self...
1/
1. Always remember to cut yourself slack & lift yourself up. Plenty of folks will try to tear you down—don't join them. Be your own biggest champion because sometimes you're all you're gonna have, and you should know that you're enough.
/2
2. Never sacrifice time on something that won't ultimately matter. Your time is your most precious gift, asset, treasure. Don't waste time in hopes that when you're older it'll "pay off." It won't, b/c that time is gone forever.

SCOTUS ruled in 2005 that police have “no legal duty to protect the public.” A Federal judge reaffirmed in 2018 when Parkland students sued the cop who ran away. They lost. AND—Qualified Immunity protects 99.9% of police negligence & violence.
So—how do we fix this?
Thread
/1
First, we must stop seeing public safety as a Police matter—& instead see it from a societal needs lens. One that accounts for (but not limited to) addiction, poverty, mental health, homelessness, suicide prevention—all things cops are NOT trained to do but asked to do anyway
/2
Remember, law enforcement *responds* to crime, but a living wage, food and water security, accessible healthcare, and public education *prevent* crime. This is a fact.
So if we want safer communities, and we all certainly do, then invest in people, not punishments.
