If you’d like a starting point, here’s a message sent from one of our members -

“Dear MTA: Throughout the pandemic--which is still ongoing, despite popular messaging otherwise--people have masked inconsistently in one of the world's most crowded train systems…”
“We know that COVID is airborne and can be transmitted through breathing, sneezing, coughing, and microscopic droplets. Unless medically contraindicated, masking--especially with a KN95 or N95--is an extremely important prevention tool in the fight against COVID.”
“Many New Yorkers who are elderly, have chronic disease, are immunocompromised, or are frontline workers, including myself, are vulnerable to the disease, and ALL of us are vulnerable to Long COVID, which disables people for months or even years.”
“Requiring a mask is not a big ask, considering the consequences. Please bring it back and actually enforce it! Thank you.”

According to the CDC’s own transmission map, which was updated yesterday afternoon, 90.38% of counties in the US are experiencing substantial or high community transmission of COVID.

This, of course, is not the map the CDC chooses to share on their own social accounts. An image of the continental...Table labeled, “Community T...
Instead, they share a “community levels” map, which does not provide an accurate picture of current transmission.

If we’re supposed to be doing our own “individual” and personal risk assessments, don’t we deserve to know what that risk actually is?
Here is a direct link to the CDC’s Community Transmission map -

This is the @PeoplesCDC weekly update for August 15, 2022! The Weather Report from the People’s CDC sheds light on the COVID situation in the US.
The Weather: As we’re figuring out how to display COVID transmission in an accurate and accessible way, please know that about 98% of the US population lives in an area with substantial or high transmission, according to the CDC transmission map.
On Variants: BA.4/5 currently makes up 94% of cases nationally. BA.4.6, another Omicron variant, has been slightly increasing throughout the past few weeks since early July. It is not yet clear whether it will surge. A bar chart shows data for ...

This is the @PeoplesCDC weekly update for August 8, 2022! The Weather Report from the People’s CDC sheds light on the COVID situation in the US. peoplescdc.org/2022/08/08/peo…
The Weather: We remain in a sustained COVID surge: every week since early June, 99% of the US population lives in high or substantial transmission. We’re currently working to update our transmission map to improve accessibility and clarity.
In the meantime, let's talk about why the map most often shared by the CDC, the Community Levels map, is not only misleading, but is also being used to justify the inaction of the federal government.

This is the @PeoplesCDC weekly update for August 2, 2022! For this week’s Weather Report, our team wants to address a mistake we made last week.
First, monkeypox virus (MPV) is mostly spread by close contact via exposure to infected skin, close face-to-face contact, and contact with items touched by infected skin. There is ongoing debate about the existence and significance of other modes of transmission as well.
By not explicitly stating how MPV is spread in our last report and by naming specific groups it was currently impacting, we contributed to ongoing stigmatization of vulnerable people, and we’re sorry.

The Current Situation - “The Weather”: As BA4/5 increasingly become the dominant new strains, we remain at a sustained surge nationally. The transmission map (covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tra…) shows that 99% of people in the US are still at high or substantial transmission.
The need for updated vaccines, masking & ventilation is urgent as are community mitigation strategies such as paid sick leave, eviction protections, & unemployment support. This map and corresponding table show COVID community transm
