You can’t learn threat intel unless you work in threat intel. Why? 🤔 You need special data for training and no one is going to give it to you. @Greg_Schloemer and I found a way to give everyone data. 🚨An important thread…🧵 1/ #ShareTheMicInCyber
I got my start in cyber in 2015 through the @LockheedMartin cyber analyst challenge. This program gave me my first chance to look at real intrusion data and practice pivoting and analysis skills. (Notice anything in the picture?😅) 2/
But as great as this challenge was, it only ran for 3 years and was accessible only to a handful of schools and students. Since then, I’ve been looking for a way to bring that opportunity to others, especially Black and underrepresented students like those at @HowardU. 3/
In 2018, I started building KC7, a cybersecurity game that I hoped would get this data in the hands of everyone. Four years later, KC7 is giving students worldwide 🌎 the chance to learn cyber defense/intel. It’s built to feel real, like the stuff we do every day @msftsecurity 4/
Yesterday, as part of the #MicrosoftHackathon, @Greg_Schloemer and I used KC7 to teach threat intel to a group of @montgomerycoll business students with no prior cyber experience. That’s right- a hackathon within a hackathon! 5/
In just 3 hours, students learned how to frame analytical questions and pivot through data using KQL queries to get answers. By the end, students clustered attacker infra via passive DNS pivots and identified targeted phishing attacks against a company. 6/
Most importantly, they had fun doing it! That’s right- zero to hero doing technical cyber analysis and they were having a blast. In fact, some of the students came up to us and asked how they could make this an actual career. 7/
In the coming weeks, we’re looking to bring KC7 to students all over the world ✨at no cost✨. We believe this tool will change the way cyber defense/intel are taught. It gives students, professionals transitioning careers, or anyone interested in cyber a chance to learn 8/
Making cyber more diverse and inclusive is everyone’s responsibility - and we need your help. We’re looking for people to: Run college/school events using the game, provide feedback/suggestions for feature, commit some code, etc… 9/
🏁 To get started - checkout the project at aka.ms/kc7 fin/
