The report shows CA in 18/19 spent
2 billion on prosecution & 1.1 billion on indigent defense
10,500 employed by DA offices &
4,305 employed by PD offices
This is not remotely close to a "fair" system of justice #FundPublicDefense lao.ca.gov/Publications/R…
It shows the gross imbalance of resources dedicated to prosecution over protecting the 6th amendment right to counsel. CA spending on indigent defense is 55% of what it spends on prosecution. That is nearly 2 to 1! The solution is clear - We need to #FundPublicDefense
This imbalance of resources fuels mass incarceration & our prisons & jails will continue to be filled with Black & Brown people. If the majority of white people in this country were incarcerated or had to rely on public defenders, funding would be drastically different. #Facts
The report doesn’t even calculate the massive amount of police resources that support every District Attorney’s office – from initial case investigation, to testing evidence, to professional witness. Alameda County alone spends over $850 million on police.
The report suggests three recommendations that are fine and good but how long will that take? The solution is clear. We need parity of resources now! Every politician should be advocating for a fair & just system and it simply can’t happen unless we #FundPublicDefense

I’ve been asked about my plan to increase representation of Black people on juries. This thread outlines FIVE steps every state should take to increase representation on juries. See what has been done in CA & what is left to accomplish. #JuryofYourPeers#BlackLivesMatterOnJuries
2. Expanding the list from which jurors are called to serve beyond CDL and voting reg. SB592 by @Scott_Wiener was passed, expanding the list to include names of tax fliers. But it should be expanded further to include utility bills and recipients of state benefits. #ExpandTheList
