Everyone knows when WW2 started in 1939, when the Nazis invaded Poland.
So why do the biggest war memorials in Berlin say the war started in 1941, and what does this tell us about the memorial debate in C Eastern Europe? 🧵
As the 30s started, it was obvious that Europe was heading for another war. Countries scrambled around for what to do to protect themselves.
The West largely chose appeasement and refused to take the Nazi threat seriously.
The Soviet Union chose a different path.
Stalin saw the rise of the Nazis as an opportunity, rather than a direct threat. He got his Commissar for Foreign Affairs Vyacheslav Molotov (who the cocktail is named after) to negotiate with the Nazis.
But what was different about this than the other non-aggression pacts?
