Presenting on burnout in Australian dental practitioners at @IADR ANZ meeting at @unimelbMDS #dental π¦·
Concerns that burnout might increase the likelihood of clinical error compromising patient safety as well as health impacts for the practitioner.
Just over 1 in 10 dental practitioners with a current diagnosis of depression or anxiety disorder.
High levels of psychological distress, and 1 in 4 classified as likely to be experiencing burnout.
Burnout is a significant issue amongst Australian dental practitioners, and there is a need to ensure adequate wellbeing and mental health support programs.

We already know that health care workers experience higher rates of suicide and suicidal ideation than the general population.
1 in 6 reported thoughts of suicide in the past 12 months
Nearly 1/3 had ever had thoughts of suicide
5.6% reported they had previously attempted suicide.
Rates that are higher than the general population and recent @beyondblue study of Australian doctors.
Today @ADAVB lodged an application for protected industrial action to support public sector dentists in their enterprise bargaining. Their EBA expired in June, and we are still waiting for an offer from the government. #RespectPublicDentistry
Victorian public dentists are the lowest paid in Australia - by a long way. A dentist working in Victorian would have to work for 4 yrs to get to the starting salary of a new graduate in NSW, 5 yrs for a new graduate in Queensland, SA or WA & 6 yrs for the equivalent in Tasmania.
That's why we are seeing massive problems with recruitment & retention. There are 19% fewer dentists now than in 2018.
