Ah, and RIGHT on cue, it seems a fair chunk of the NAR types had a good old fashioned Rosh Hashanah Rapture Panic (yes, this is...a Thing, as I'll note, part of a LOT of apocalypticism re the High Holidays in the NAR and related movements).

A brief thread:

1/x
So I've written before on High Holidays Apocalyptic Thought in the NAR, including how (of all things) the January 6th Insurrection was actually intimately connected (yes, seriously) with this sort of thought:

Another facet of that is Rapture Panics.

2/x
Now, the NAR is probably at best quasi-premillenarian with some being post-millenarian and some even holding the belief that the Second Coming is in the form of a "corporate Christ" consisting of the Elect) but proto-NAR movements (like MSoG and Latter Rain)...

3/x
themselves evolved from segments of Pentecostalism that, at least arguably, are premillenial and have always promoted a kind of Rapture Theology that has had them being taken up first, lolzing over everyone else's suffering for 7 years, and then coming back...

4/x
to kill everyone else. (Tim LaHaye actually pretty much fictionalized the whole concept in the Left Behind books; it's actually a pretty good summary on what Latter Rain endtime theology was like circa the mid-90s, to be honest.)

And, well, since the late 70s,

5/x
in addition to the whole "Israel must exist before the Rapture can happen" (which was honestly prebaked into the particular form of premillenial dispensationalism that functionally birthed most Pentecostalism: dailykos.com/stories/2007/8…)

6/c
...well, in addition to that, you started having (again late 70s/early 80s) a fair number of proto-NAR promoters actually starting to embrace a lot of the cultural appropriation themselves (versus just using it as a tool for conversion), which started with...

7/x
things like "Bible tours" and the Widow's Mite Grift (common in Prosperity Gospel circles, get lots of out-of-circulation 1-agora pieces not even worth melting down for the aluminum, hand 'em out as "gen-u-wine Widow's Mites from the Holy Land", make "love offerings" fast)

8/x
and by the mid-80s had definitely evolved to actually incorporating this into the *remarkably* scripted "outpourings" that even then were happening in what became the NAR.

Which led, eventually, to the first Rosh Hashanah Rapture Panic in 1988...

9/x
when Ed Whisenant (taking full advantage of ALL the trends going on in the NAR and Prosperity Gospel communities, of fixations on Israel, on fascinations with the High Holidays and religious calendar, and the happy coincidence that Israel was coming up on...

10/x
a particular anniversary of its statehood that just happened to coincide with Important Numbers in NAR Numerology...so he promptly released a book "88 Reasons the Rapture Will Happen in 1988" (one being Israel had been around 40 years, and 40 is a Very Important Number)

11/x
And this took off like *wildfire*.

People started selling off their homes, possessions, pulling their kids out of school (they'd not need any of that, The Rapture Was Nigh!). Arranging for pets to be cared for.

It was *very* popular in the group I grew up in,

12/x
and it was one of those rare instances (as I recall) that you even had the rare moments of sanity of the occasional preacher trying to encourage people to NOT sell all their worldly possessions and give away their life's savings because "no man knows the hour or date",

13/x
all the while still giving the old wink-wink nod-nod when said life's savings went in the offering plate as a final "love offering".

Needless to say, the Rapture did not ensue in 1988, a lot of people ended up penniless (and at least some ended up homeless, because

14/x
people had quit their jobs and sold their homes expecting the eschaton to be immanentized that month.

(Hence why I'm a little hesitant to laugh on the "Rapture did not Ensue" today, because I've seen what happens with failed religious panics.)

15/x
Despite Whisenant trying several more times to prognosticate why the Rapture was going to happen around the High Holidays (and becoming more obscure) he and Jim Bakker in particular managed to contribute a lasting meme that has come up repeatedly since:

16/x
That in general, "outpourings", and quite probably the Rapture (probably) would occur sometime around the High Holidays and that these were always things of Great Portent.

One of the next big Rosh Hashanah Rapture Panics was from ol' Pat Robertson,

17/x
who--along with John Hagee, a notorious NAR promoter--started pushing the idea in the early 2010s regarding a rather interesting coincidence that occasionally happens with lunar calendars (lunar eclipses)...and particularly in 2016,

18/x
there was a particular coincidence of four lunar eclipses in a year, one of which happened to fall on Rosh Hashanah.

The NAR types went positively guanopsychotic; the combo of numerology and Rosh Hashanah led to the idea that The End Was Nigh,

19/x
so much undercurrent was done over the "Four Blood Moons" and it being an obvious sign the Tribulation was about to ensue, or some outpouring, or the Rapture, but all in all it was obviously a sign The End Was Nigh (Send in your love offerings!)

20/x
And while The Former Guy did get elected, and while this has been a Very Bad Move for the US in particular and world politics in general, I'm not sure he's exactly the disaster they were picturing.

At any rate, the Rapture did not ensue in September 2016.

21/x
And as the NAR and similar Nasty Types have all but been given license to run amok and take the masks completely off, by September 2019 or so you had the Pr*ud B*ys talking insurrection, and by September 2020 the fires of insurrection were well and truly lit in the NAR

22/x
So on one hand maybe I should be glad this is a mere Rapture Panic, but there's still a lot of pushing to bring the Millenium by violence, particularly in the NAR.

(And now you all know why I want to piss on Jim Bakker's grave when he dies.)

23/end

@utopian2050 @the_meghaning A whole lot of 'em, to be perfectly blunt, never intended there to be another election in their lifetimes.

Or their kid's lifetimes.

Or their children's children, down to (at least) the seventh generation.

The actual seeds of January 6th were planted in 2015.

1/x
@utopian2050 @the_meghaning There were active calls as far back as 2017 in far-right circles explicitly calling for Trump to do a full on Alberto Fujimori or Jorge Serrano Elias style coup (as part of QAnonsense, and later more explicitly by the Pr*ud B*ys), and among Christian Nationalist circles,

2/x
@utopian2050 @the_meghaning and *especially* NAR circles, Trump was basically being groomed as a "righteous pagan" who would pave the way for full-on Christian Nationalist rule (in the NAR case, they actually made this explicit in noting that Trump had a "Cyrus Anointing", which

@timsquirrell Very good writeup, and if I may embroider a bit on this from the other side of the pond (as someone who grew up in New Apostolic Reformation circles that have...adopted a distressing amount of this stuff and can be really considered religio-fascist in and of themselves):

1/x
@timsquirrell So, while NAR types are a *little* more down-low on the really explicit anti-Semitism (and I emphasize a "little more down-low", because there's some very specifically NAR flavours of anti-Semitism, as I'll get into), there has (really as long as I can remember)

2/x
@timsquirrell have been really, deeply, truly, *incredibly* anti-LGBTQIA (though in my case it may have been I was raised in a group that is actually one of a few reasons the American Family Association is listed as an anti-LGBTQIA hate group by human rights/civil rights groups here).

So this is gonna be one of my infamously long threads, and actually not about political stuff, but more on a certain game series that is Very Meaningful to me and why :3

1/x

So, I got into video games, and into TWEWY, a bit later in life than most folks in the fandom, and some time after the game came out and before KH:3D got more people into the fandom, and my intro was even a little unusual lol

2/x
I was on a lost weekend with people I pretty much consider "framily", they'd brought over a friend, we had met a long time before, and they knew my penchant for having maths as a bit of a special interest, my religious trauma, my mistrust of authority figures...

It's becoming a bit of a tradition for me to do a Sunday teach-in, but today we'll be kind of brief on it, and start with a thread on how Christian Nationalist groups are abusing a loophole in tax law big enough to drive the *USS Nimitz* through

1/x
Full thread here: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1550842…

So this is something I've actively described as the "Form 990 Loophole", and it's something that Christian Nationalist churches and--increasingly--Christian Nationalist lobbying groups use to hide funding sources

2/x
The "Form 990 Loophole" has in past been used to successfully stymie investigations into even embezzlement scandals, with not even Congressional subpoenas able to get info: dailykos.com/stories/2007/1…

(This involved, of note, at least one person connected to Trump and J6.)

Between this, and probably *the* biggest push for the Great Sedition starting around the same time with the "Jericho March", it's high time I talk about Christian Nationalist (and NAR) apocalypticism re the High Holidays, particularly Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

A thread:

1/x
So. There is...a whole, whole lot of conspiracy theology in NAR circles (which honestly spreads out to Christian Nationalism in general, but is most prevalent in the NAR) where there is not only a promotion of a certain Xanatos Gambit regarding immanentizing the eschaton,

2/x
but (as part of said conspiracy theology, which in essence claims that Israel has to be re-established *and* the world's Jewish population must be moved to Israel before Jesus can return) there's a lot of...very weird cultural appropriation of Jewish religious culture

And...this is actually something a lot of us who have had an interest in game preservation have had serious concerns would happen ever since "online required to play" services (like Steam) and DLC as a major component of games started to be a Thing

1/x
There are already multiple examples of historically important games that are, or are at risk of becoming, lost media because of so much of those games being on online servers, but up to now this has been mostly MMORPGs and mobile games.

Not so much anymore.

2/x
And as we now see, even DLC content that has already been downloaded, games that have been downloaded, can in fact be shut down and rendered unplayable if the creators do not decide to allow unlocks for those who've DL'd it before the game shutdown.
