Yesterday I left #Estonia, #Tallinn for personal reasons. A few weeks before the war, came here as Digital Nomad (D-visa) owner. And I feel obligated to say a few warm words about this place.
It is a modern and beautiful city, with great care for historical architecture and a great taste in developing new ones. And not only the buildings: streets, navigation, transportation: take anything, and you can see that someone gave it a thought.
The email works here! Starting with my visa preparation, I got tremendous support by email. I heard many fantastic stories on digitalization here, but never needed anything. I don't expect to be surprised after @diiagovua which AFAIK made with Estonian knowledge sharing.
I love how effective and cool are @Politsei, even how they look! I heard that working in Police is one of the most prestigious jobs in Estonia, and it's hard to get there.
My communication with them regarding a few cases:
I believe we will get the same police service in Ukraine eventually. Well-paid everyday heroes.
I don't remember much about the first months, as the war started, and I was 24/7 at the apartment, helping with colleagues' evacuation: thought-different.com/post/managemen…
It's cool we have friends here; they helped by showing us all around and the emotional support during the first months.
So what is cool? You'll be surprised, but the weather! We thought it would always be gray, but in reality, I was wearing sunglasses constantly the whole winter and spring. The sunset colors are mind-blowing.
The city is a pedestrian haven. Also very well suited for scooters and bikes. Traffic is minimal, even during rush hours. Parking is well organized. After Kyiv, it is hard to comprehend. I miss and love Kyiv a lot, but not that part.
For a city with a population similar to my hometown, Simferopol, it has way more locations and places to visit. I am not a big fan of walking somewhere to stare at a lovely building or enjoy a park, but you can't escape it here.
The seaside walk is fantastic, and it keeps improving and growing as we see something new each month. Parks inside the city are charming; the streets are clean, and almost everything works in the evening and on weekends.
Too much russian speech on the streets, yes. And you never know it is just russian speaking Estonians, local vatniks, or russian tourists: that is confusing.
I remember we helped a bit in the aid center for our refugees, and the orgs were thinking about whether they should ..
..paint the Ukrainian flag on the wall and decided it was better not to provoke stupid locals. But I love how strict the law and general politics in Estonia are about those 'elements.'
Speaking of the refugees, I can't imagine how significant the economic burden is to handle our people in need here, but wow, there is even a Ukrainian school here now! I can't find the words of gratitude that could reflect mine!
In some districts, there is a festival when private backyards become restaurants: owners cook, and tables are set up in the garden. I ate a fantastic dinner, but also I learned how nice life and nature are in those areas, literally in the forest.
Medicine.. I haven't had too many troubles, but the private part of it looks very European and not in a good way: slow and impossible to get a specific appointment. We are so fortunate in Ukraine; we shouldn't forget that.
Nearest ophthalmologist dates for example on the screen
What else? I am looking forward to spending more time here, maybe another nomad summer.
And if Estonia does not decide, as Poland did, to free remote working Ukrainians who pay taxes at home, I will let you know how it is easy to declare and pay taxes in Estonia.
Someone from the volunteers team made nice video
Almost forgot. When I mentally was ready to back to music lessons, in local musicians community I found a guy who rented me one of his double basses, so I can keep practicing and also was very helpful and kind. So I did not lose my skills.
