Okay WOW. Just WOW.

My 19yo daughter found it. She found the labyrinthine magical bookstore that you thought only existed in stories. This place is WILD and clearly chock full of forbidden tomes that open portals to other worlds.

Get cozy and come with me on a magical journey. A dark wood bookshelf full ...

You walk into the shop and at first it looks like there are just two rooms of books. Regular used bookstore. Cool! Also antique prints and curious tucked in any open space. Lovely. Warm happy feelings already.

As with most magical things, wonders await those who look closer. Image

Wow, that's pretty cool! Check out the Lord of the Rings poster!

It says six more rooms, but that's not right. You can't actually count the rooms.

There are too many hallways and odd little niches full of books to even know what a room is anymore. An odd little nook, its wal...

"Still more," the little sign says.

Yes. YES. By this point, you are lost. You don't ever want to be found again. A long hall of books, with ...
As you explore, you browse, of course.

Some of the books are newer. Some are your favorite paperbacks from childhood. Others are 100 years old or more, just sitting there on the shelves. You can pick them up, handle them, breathe them in. Image
The books are clearly organized. There's a room of history and geography, a room of science fiction and fantasty and comics. Sometimes the system is clear and sometimes it isn't, but you know it's there. Yet another room of books. ...
And then there's the Old Books Room.

Oh wow. Oh WOW.

Books 100+ years old just sitting there on the shelf. Image
I craved this gorgeous 200 year old 4-volume set of the Canterbury Tales, but my budget was too tight to buy it. Image
I had to get SOMETHING. I wanted to support this magical place. My teens (completely spellbound as time slipped by) helped me look.

Really we wanted a magical tome of ancient spells, but we found this beautiful 1883 illustrated edition of Gray's Elegy. Maybe this, my 19yo said. An old book with lovely ill...
We paged through, looking at the illustrations, wondering at holding a 130+ year old book in our hands.

Then my daughter turned the page and we all froze.

There was a bookmark there. A lovely, hand-painted bookmark, still touched between the pages of the book.

I got CHILLS. A bookmark with frayed silv...
It had been there long enough to leave a permanent shadow on the facing page, a discoloration matching the bookmark.

We turned more pages, reverentially, and found another one.

Easter Souvenir, 1888, it said.

I won't lie, my pulse was RACING. Image
Someone had put those bookmarks there 130 years ago, and there they remained, a little paused moment in time.

It was surprisingly not-expensive, so we bought it.

But first, we continued on, finding what might possibly be the final room at last. Another room of books, this...
But was it really the end? There was an archway in the back...

A literal wall of books and a No Entry sign blocked the way. But there were STILL MORE books in the dim space beyond, and a lit space with yet more beyond that.

I like to think the rooms of books went on forever. Image
This is the Lyrical Ballad Bookstore in Saratoga Springs, NY. A cursory Google search suggests that like many magical places, they don't have a web presence. But it's not hard to find—or at least, if it WANTS you to find it—so if you're in the area, go lose yourself in it!
Slightly less cursory web search: They do have a lowkey FB page: facebook.com/people/Lyrical…
Ooh, for people sad that they don't live near enough to visit this store, check out the comments, where people have mentioned similar stores in other cities! *Takes notes for future travels*
(Oh wow, this is taking off! Hi!!! 😊 I've actually written a fantasy trilogy about a political heir who gets accidentally linked to a powerful fire warlock while hunting down a rare book and winds up in a world of trouble, if that sounds like your thing!) bookshop.org/books/the-teth…
I need to stop trying (and failing spectacularly) to keep up with my notifications and go to bed, but it makes me so happy to see all the people with fond memories of this bookstore or similar bookstores or bookstores that only exist in deep places in their imaginations 🥰
(Oh, before I go, it occurs to me that my OTHER fantasy trilogy doesn't have bookshops but it DOES have a castle with lots of odd hidden nooks and passageways and unexpected secret places, so uh, you can see why I loved this bookstore so much 😊❤️) bookshop.org/books/the-obsi…
...My notifications were murdered in the night! 😂

I can't keep up, but DEFINITELY check out all the comments with recommendations for similar bookstores, some with pictures!!! Best comments EVER! 😍
MVP commenter has put the bookstores in the comments on a map!!! 🤩 Check it out and find a fabulous bookstore near you!!!

Writing craft thread time! Here's one on something I often have to bang my head against through multiple drafts: main characters!

Main characters are so important, but surprisingly hard to get a handle on sometimes. Luckily, like so much else, you can fix them in edits.
As someone who generally has one POV character, one thing I always have to watch out for is making sure that my MC is more than just a peephole into the story. They need to be vivid and compelling and engaging in their own right! But that can be hard to do from inside their head.
I often wind up needing to revise early drafts to make sure that my main character is always more than a camera I'm wheeling around to show you things—someone you're invested in as more than an insertion point.

Some tips, techniques, and strategies I've found useful:

This is incredibly exciting!!! Hearing aids were life-changing for me. I think this is a very good thing, but I also have some thoughts about potential issues. (The article Warren links is great, too!) My thoughts as a hearing aid user for what to consider:
First of all, this is a huge step! Hearing aids can be unbelievably expensive and have been out of reach for many, many people. This is very good and will help a ton of people.
That said, here's something to be aware of if you or someone you love is thinking about getting over the counter hearing aids: fitting the hearing aid's amplification to your specific hearing loss is INCREDIBLY important, and this is where I worry that users may run into trouble.

I'm getting close to a point where I'll be writing a big fight scene, and I thought I'd share some process thoughts!

I had some big fight scenes in THE IVORY TOMB as well which I'm really proud of, and I feel like I'm learning and refining my strategies for how to do them.
In no particular order, things I like to know/figure out going in before I write the fight scene:

FEELINGS - What is the emotional landscape of my participating characters going in? What just happened? What's at stake? What relationships are in play?
Sometimes the feelings are just "Oh shit I don't want to die" and that's OK! Sometimes there's some complexity between the combatants (former friends fighting, respectful enemies, hated nemesis you're confronting at last, etc), and I want to give some space for that to play out.

Whew, time to get my head back in the book after a whirwind long weekend. I'm hoping to wrap this pass on my draft ASAP so I can do a full second pass before I turn it in...I have so many ideas for making it better already!
I know some writers who do a very polished first draft, crafting everything methodically and beautifully on the first pass, but much as I'd love to do that, I can't seem to avoid an extended messy flailing phase. 😂
One of my biggest writing time management problems is figuring out when to stop and go back & revise vs when to forge ahead and finish the draft. As I get better at this, I spot more problems earlier, and the temptation is always to go back and fix them!

Okay, I feel a writing thread coming on! Here we go:

How to unf*ck your through line.

You ever get that feeling that something's not right—a reluctance to push ahead, a dissatisfaction with your draft—but it's hard to pin down?

For me, often that's a through line issue.
These can be tricky, because there are lots of reasons that the thread runnning through your book from beginning to end might be broken or snarled!

Here are some questions I ask to try to assess what might be wrong:
Is my MC just reacting to things as they come up?

I like to spring a lot of nasty surprises on my characters, so I run into this one a lot! If my MC is just twiddling her thumbs waiting for the next OH SHIT moment, my dramatic tension is going to drop to the floor between them.

Hmm, let's see...How about a craft thread on structure?

I love structure & feel pretty confident working with it—I feel like it's a strength for me, and I can give decent structural feedback.

But the funny thing is that I know VERY LITTLE about classic structural models. 😅
When people talk about beat sheets or Save the Cat or a 5 act structure, I can only nod along. I haven't read a lot of books on structure, and I don't subscribe to any formula.

When I think of structure, I'm talking about certain key pieces that come together to make a story.
(This is not to cast any shade whatsoever on people who DO like using these! They clearly work for many people! It's just not how I personally work.)

So to build a good story structure—and to fix problems—I try to look at these elements that form the bones of a story for me:
