We asked Russian mercenaries and contract soldiers who have already fought in Moscow's war against Ukraine what they think of the new mobilization campaign. One said that on his first day in Ukraine, "I realized I had made the biggest mistake of my life."

The same man said that as he rode in an army truck and watched bombed-out villages go by, "I realized that we were the occupiers; we were the fascists. [...] I realized we were actually destroying a country. Along with its civilian population."

A veteran of the Wagner PMC told Meduza, "These [newly drafted] IT guys and other cannon fodder — what are they going to do? They won’t change anything [at the front] and they won’t solve anything."

Another soldier described his attempts to convince others not to go:
"I say, 'What if NATO did come? Would our lives get worse? Is your life really so good now?' They don’t have any arguments for why NATO is bad — they just repeat [what they hear on TV]."

In 2018, 3 journalists were murdered while making a doc. film about the Wagner Group’s work in the Central African Republic — where the PMC has been credibly accused of committing war crimes. Subsequent investigations have linked Prigozhin to the murders. meduza.io/en/feature/201…

Here's how Russian and Ukrainian public figures reacted to Russia passing new "mobilization" legislation just as dates were announced for sham referendums on annexing Ukraine's occupied territories.
meduza.io/en/feature/202…
Opposition politician Lev Shlosberg: "It cannot be ignored that the amendments passed [today] copy Stalin’s Criminal Code almost verbatim."

Political scientist Tatyana Stanovaya:
"[In Putin’s mind,] here's how it will go:
(1) Annexation
(2) fighting intensifies, which 🇷🇺 regards as an attack on its territory
(3) mobilization
(4) [Russia] threatens to use nuclear weapons if 🇺🇦 doesn’t retreat."
