Today we're announcing a new study to assess the feasibility of building a Zap fusion energy plant at Washington's only remaining coal power station, @TransAlta's Big Hanaford Power Plant in Centralia.
Replace burning coal with fusion heat to turn steam into electricity and we revolutionize the dirtiest power plants in the world🚭
Retrofitting retired coal plants could save money on infrastructure, time on construction and permitting, and provide back some of jobs and community support lost when a site retires
To be clear, this project isn't a commitment to a site for our first-of-a-kind pilot plant. It's a collaborative study that will get us to our first 100 plants faster!
We appreciate the support of the Centralia Coal Transition Grants and look forward to working with @lewiscounty and the local community. cctgrants.com/category/grant…
Why plan a plant when we're still proving the physics? We're climbing toward scientific breakeven, but the ultimate summit remains commercialization and a parallel approach to science, engineering and product is what will get us to a fusion power plant this decade.
