…and it has been for two decades now.

To celebrate the 20th birthday of today's United States Strategic Command, we look back at moments and milestones that helped shape our mission: to guarantee the security of our Nation and our Allies.

Borne from the Continental Air Forces, the Cold War-era Strategic Air Command (1946-1992) gave way to the first U.S. Strategic Command, which served for a decade.

The October 1, 2002 merger with U.S. Space Command's first incarnation created today's #USSTRATCOM.

Beyond the core strategic deterrence & global strike role, early missions included missile defense, operations in space, network defense, analysis/targeting, C4ISR, and CWMD.

For 20 years, the transformation continued as #USSTRATCOM turned over old missions and received new ones. The command's cyber-related responsibilities were soon assumed by @US_CYBERCOM, and @US_SpaceCom took over operational space missions.

In 2019, the global warfighting combatant command headquarters moved into the new Gen. Curtis E. LeMay Command & Control Facility, located @Offutt_AFB in Bellevue, Neb., underscoring the nation's commitment to its Nuclear Command, Control & Communications architecture.

#USSTRATCOM has always advocated for electronic warfare, and the Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations mission brought new dimensions to USSTRATCOM's broad portfolio of capabilities.

We are on a path to modernizing our ready and resilient strategic nuclear force including the #NuclearTriad.

Today, 150,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coastguardsmen, & Civilians support #USSTRATCOM's mission to deter strategic attack & employ forces, as directed, to guarantee the security of our Nation & our Allies.
