Russia's defense ministry has confirmed it withdrew from Lyman, less than 24 hours after Putin claimed the area as part of Russia.

This is a major setback. Clearly mobilization and rhetorical escalation aren't enough to turn the battlefield tide yet.

Ramzan Kadyrov absolutely lays into Russia's general staff for losing Lyman – the starkest infighting we've seen among Russian forces so far.

He calls on Putin to retaliate by declaring martial law on the border and using low-yield nuclear weapons.

Lots of Russian officials have bragged about Russia's nuclear capabilities in the last few months. But this is the first time any of them have called on Putin to actually use them.

A lot of talk about this in elite circles in Moscow in recent weeks. This is a dangerous moment.

Putin begins his speech. He starts talking about the "votes" to join Russia in Russia-controlled parts of Ukraine.

"The people have made their choice [...] this is the will of millions."

Thus follows what was called "thunderous applause" in the USSR. Image
Putin says southeastern Ukraine is actually part of Russia because the Russian state's predecessors ruled it, it was part of the Russian empire, and because the USSR fought to free it from the Nazis in World War II.
Putin holds a moment of silence for the separatist commanders and Russian soldiers killed over the years fighting Ukraine in the Donbas. Image

Vladimir Putin has given @Snowden a Russian passport, state newswire Ria Novosti reports.

Just in time for him to be... drafted into the Russian army?

@Snowden Here's the decree, just published by the Kremlin publication.pravo.gov.ru/Document/View/… Image
@Snowden Bear in mind, Snowden did apply for Russian citizenship two years ago to avoid the risk of being separated from his Russian-born son during the pandemic. But the timing of Putin's decree is, of course, inauspicious

"To defend the country and the people, we will use all the means at our disposal."
Putin says the west wants to "weaken, divide, and destroy Russia." He says the west "openly says they broke up the USSR in 1991, and now is the time to do the same to Russia"
Putin: "The main goals of the special military operation remain unchanged. The Luhansk People's Republic has been completely liberated, and the Donetsk People's Republic has been partly liberated."
