Raja Raja Cholan - A conqueror, A Temple Builder and An apologetic Hindu
Raja Raja Chola has built nearly 80 stone Hindu temples during his reign. All the temples acted as Economic epicentre & for Religious assimilation. UNESCO has recognised them as “Great Living Chola Temples”
He arranged the hymns written by three saint poets Sambandar, Appar and Sundarar, ensured that these were sung in all the temples, a tradition which is continued till date. He was known as ‘Tirumurai Kanda Cholan’ meaning one who saved the Tirumurai.
He has setup a clear Temple Administration. Devadana villages donated to temples were tax-free and the entire revenue from these villages was given to the temples for their sustenance. Revenue from the villages was settled orally. Donations done in cash or paddy
Elaborate administrative machinery was put in place for administering the temple. People rich in land, connections or capital was appointed as temple treasurers, brahmacharins were selected to work as temple servants & accountants were appointed to maintain the temple accounts
Besides every temple also had watchmen, men and women temple servants, representatives for each shrine within the temple complex, superintendents, religious heads, priests, registrars of treasury records, temple registrars, gardeners and wards.
He has set up so many Sanskrit schools around the temples to teach Vedas, Religion and Philosophy. He appointed teachers for all schools. The details were found in Uthramerur inscriptions
He has setup various Variyams , associations to continue various Hindu traditions. He remained as an apologetic Hindu.
