The unmasking of "Perla" creates new problems for Ron DeSantis. Lawyers for migrants suing him tell me they will name Perla as a defendant, seeking discovery and a deposition under oath. "What exact instructions were given to Perla?" one lawyer asks.
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
Lawyers for the migrants suing Ron DeSantis over his vile stunt say that Perla's unmasking could lead to discovery and depositions fleshing out DeSantis's role.

"Who put her up to it? We will, as the case proceeds, learn even more about his involvement.”

Remember when Ron DeSantis publicly took credit for the migrant stunt and loudly promised the flights to liberal strongholds would continue?

Evidence is mounting that his lawyers said, Um, sir, these flights just might be legally problematic:

It's critical that Ron DeSantis pays a political or legal price for this vile scheme. This whole saga shows how central the toxic combination of official corruption and racist agitprop is to GOP politics these days. This can't be allowed to stand.

Gavin Newsom's trolling of Ron DeSantis is getting epic:

*Slams DeSantis migrant stunt as "cruel"

*Signs law offering sanctuary to trans families abused in red states

*Sends aid to Florida, in contrast to DeSantis opposing aid for Sandy

New from me:
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
We need more Democrats to engage in what Gavin Newsom is doing here.

His trolling is filling a void among Dems, by making a big argument to the base — and the country — about ongoing GOP radicalization and red-state cruelty in a way other Dems will not.

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/… ImageImage
Gavin Newsom's scalding criticism of Ron DeSantis' migrant stunt as cruel and possibly illegal is not just on the money. It also points to a profound contrast in values that the country needs to hear debated. That's why we need more of this.

To prevent a 2024 coup, one of the single biggest things we can do is keep Doug Mastriano and Kari Lake as far away from power as possible. Liz Cheney is 100% correct: Those two pose a particularly severe threat to US democracy. Their defeat is imperative.
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
If a corrupt GOP governor (like Doug Mastriano or Kari Lake) certifies sham electors, a MAGA House majority could count those electors.

That's all it would take.

We need ECA reform. And we need to keep those two as far from power as possible.

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
This is funny but revealing:

Doug Mastriano and Kari Lake are both describing Liz Cheney as a "Democrat."

To them, demanding an unequivocal commitment to respecting election outcomes really does work against the GOP's interests as they understand them.

At the core of Ron DeSantis' vile migrant stunt is an epic absurdity that continues to pass unremarked upon.

I've got new numbers that illustrate how dumb one of their primary arguments truly is. 1/

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
DeSantis defenders say the stunt illustrates for blue states the real burden of migrant influxes. But blue states *already* harbor many migrants awaiting asylum.

At my request, analysts at TRAC illustrated the point with new numbers. See below. 2/

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
“The two states with the highest current number of pending asylum cases are California and New York," says the co-director of TRAC, who cut these numbers for me.

125K in Calif
110K in NY
98K in Florida
75K in Texas

The "burden" is already dispersed. 3/

What's striking about the appeals court demolition of Judge Cannon is that it says the following in 50 different ways:

No, Trump isn't actually above the law.

“It’s about as thorough a repudiation as one could get,” law prof @steve_vladeck tells me.

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
@steve_vladeck The appeals court demolishes Judge Cannon's strange argument that Trump will be subject to special "stigma," and therefore was entitled to court intervention in the prosecution.

Which gets to an even bigger point: Yes, the law applies to Trump, too.

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/… ImageImage
@steve_vladeck Important, overlooked moment on Hannity:

Trump suggests FBI planted evidence in Mar-a-Lago docs. Hannity asks: Wouldn't surveillance footage reveal that? Trump pulls a homina homina homina.

Remember how Trump "threatened" to release that footage?

Trump's lawyers won't say whether he declassified documents, showing that one of his leading defenses is imploding. The special master basically said, put up or shut up. And Trump's lawyers chose the latter! His special master ruse is already backfiring.
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
By saying he declassified docs, Trump put his lawyers "in the position where they have no good answer," former FBI counsel Andrew Weissmann tells me. If they won't say he did, it confirms “they’re clearly classified, and clearly belong to the government.”

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
Now that we've learned Trump was told by a former WH lawyer last year that hoarding the docs was likely illegal, also note this:

Trump and his propagandists began to claim he "declassified" the docs while likely knowing this was a bogus defense.

Don't overlook this. Trump's Ohio rally was unhinged, but he also delivered a clear message: He fully expects a GOP Congress to shut down any/all investigations into him. The bargain with the GOP is this: I give you my base, you place me above the law.
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
At the JD Vance rally, Trump unleashed an unhinged rant about all the investigations into him. Then he said:

"JD, you gotta get it stopped."

This is best understood as a directive, a declaration of what he *actually does expect* from a GOP Congress:

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/… ImageImage
A GOP House could:

*Aim for targeted defunding of ongoing investigations/prosecutions of Trump

*Push for government shutdowns to try to force that defunding

*Threaten debt ceiling breaches to that same end

Dems need to disable the debt limit for good.
