NEW: About 5,000 more babies will be born in Mississippi each year due to the Dobbs ruling and the abortion ban—but officials say the state is not prepared for the influx.

It's "a problem we need to solve," said Mississippi CPS Commissioner Andrea Sanders.mississippifreepress.org/28031/official…
“We heard testimony from Dr. Edney in particular, but others also, that as a result of the Dobbs decision, … that on a conservative basis, there will be 5,000 additional births,” said Mississippi Sen. Brice Wiggins, a Pascagoula Republican.

Dr. Edney’s testimony indicated that most of the additional 5,000 babies born due to Dobbs will be "unwanted or unplanned."

About 60% of kids in those circumstances “are on Medicaid” or “end up in the system," said Sen. Brice Wiggins, R-Pascagoula.

Sen. Brice Wiggins: “So are y’all prepared for 5,000 additional kids across the state (due to the Dobbs ruling)?”

CPS Commissioner Andrea Sanders: "No sir. Not by myself, I’m not."

Wiggins: "So that’s something we should be concerned about."

Mississippi is already the deadliest state for babies and fetuses alike.

Mississippi has the highest infant mortality rate, with 8 in 1,000 Mississippi children dying before their first birthday.

Mississippi also has the highest miscarriage rate.
mississippifreepress.org/28031/official…
Mississippi leads the nation in births to unmarried mothers, preterm births, miscarriages and low birthweights.

Mississippi’s pregnancy-related maternal death rate is 1.9x higher than the U.S. average, with Black moms at 3x times the risk of white moms.

More than half of Mississippi’s 82 counties do not have an OB-GYN, and many do not have hospitals.

Read this report from @nickjudin on why Mississippi is the most dangerous state for mothers and babies:

“I think we’ve done an excellent job of protecting the baby in the womb. But once it’s out of the womb it’s like, ‘Whoop!’ You’re on your own,” Republican Mississippi Sen. Kevin Blackwell told his fellow lawmakers on the Senate floor in March.
mississippifreepress.org/28031/official…
In March, The Republican-led Mississippi Senate voted 46-5 to expand postpartum Medicaid coverage for news mothers from 60 days after giving birth to 12 months.

But anti-abortion Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn killed it in his chamber.
mississippifreepress.org/21646/house-po…
“As I’ve said very publicly, I’m opposed to Medicaid expansion,” Speaker Gunn told the AP on March 9, erroneously conflating Medicaid expansion with the targeted postpartum extension. “We need to look for ways to keep people off, not put them on.”
mississippifreepress.org/21646/house-po…
On the day of the Dobbs ruling, Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn said he thinks that even a 12-year-old girl who became pregnant after being raped by her father or uncle should still be forced to give birth because "all life is precious."
mississippifreepress.org/25273/12-year-…
Speaker Philip Gunn’s Commission on Life is supposed to propose solutions to Mississippi's poor maternal, fetal and infant health outcomes.

But he opposes two policies that experts say could help most: Medicaid expansion and 12-months postpartum coverage.

Don't forget: Amy Coney Barrett didn't recuse herself in the Dobbs case despite accepting $4,000+ from the Alliance Defending Freedom—which wrote the 15-week abortion ban at the center of Dobbs with the express purpose of using it to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“We have a plan to make Roe irrelevant or completely reverse it,” the ADF's Kevin Theriot said in 2018, previewing Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban.

The goal was to trigger a Supreme Court case that Trump's newly appointed judges would hear.

Amy Coney Barrett accepted $4k+ to give speeches to the ADF's Blackstone Fellowship, which the ADF designed "to train a new generation of lawyers...and perhaps even Supreme Court judges" and "inspire a distinctly Christian worldview in every area of law."mississippifreepress.org/20042/to-rule-…

NEW: Yesterday, Gov. Tate Reeves linked a new Mississippi solar energy incentive program to "Woke Biden policies."

In reply, the MS Public Service Commission voted to reaffirm its support for the program, which could reach 9,000 homes. @nickjudin reports:mississippifreepress.org/28045/after-go…
“Woke Biden policies have driven the cost of energy too high for Americans,” Reeves said. “The MS Public Service Commission is prepping to vote again to make you pay more each month."

Commissioner Presley estimates a max average increase of $1.18/monthly.mississippifreepress.org/28045/after-go…
“Missippians (sic) shouldn’t be forced to pay higher utility rates to fund rebates for those who install solar panels,” said Republican Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson. “This is another tax straight out of the Biden administration’s playbook.”mississippifreepress.org/28045/after-go…

"This old maternity dress I've got
Is goin' in the garbage
The clothes I'm wearin' from now on
Won't take up so much yardage
Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills
Yeah I'm makin' up for all those years
Since I've got the pill."
—Loretta Lynn, "The Pill"
"The Pill," in which Loretta Lynn declared she was done serving as an incubator for a man who went out and had all the fun while she tended to babies, was banned from country radio when she released in in 1975.

It became one of her defining songs anyway.

And yes, she uses the word "incubator" in the song.

On Tuesday, Y'all Politics criticized Mississippi Today for not disclosing that the editor's mother was involved in approving the stadium in the Favre/TANF scandal. (Link: yallpolitics.com/2022/09/27/cou…)

I asked about it; He sent a statement & posted this note:
mississippitoday.org/2022/09/28/edi…
Mississippi Today editor @GanucheauAdam: "I learned about this on the evening of Sept. 20, 2022, when the blog’s editor began calling around for comment."

He says they implemented a policy to allow any reporting to go forward "without my direction."
mississippitoday.org/2022/09/28/edi…
"And after continued internal discussions, we decided to add an editor’s note to each future story mentioning the USM volleyball project, including retroactively adding the note to one earlier story that published after we learned the information."

I just want to be clear: I was NOT the first to report on the MDHS welfare scandal.

Many MS journalists reported on the news when it broke in February 2020 (me included: jacksonfreepress.com/news/2020/feb/…).

Others (including @ayewolfe) had been reporting on issues at MDHS before then.
And just to be real with y'all, being the first to report something isn't a priority for me. It's cool when it happens, but I'd rather make sure I had the time, energy and resources to get a story RIGHT than to get there first.
Prior to 2020, I did do some reporting that on Nancy New, the non-profit operator at the center of the MDHS scandal.

Tate Reeves actually filmed a pro-public education campaign ad at her private school in 2020 (after helping her get millions in vouchers).
