1) Several new statements by Major Archbishop Shevchuk, of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
The most significant is perhaps his speech in Babyn Yar, site of a wartime massacre of Ukrainian Jews, in which he draws parallels with the current situation.
2) "Today, the voice of blood from the Ukrainian land rises to the heavens: the voice of the blood of those innocently killed by the Russian occupier - children, women, old men, the voice of the blood of the sons and daughters of the Ukrainian people, who today protect Ukraine
3) from the new misanthropic, essentially Nazi, ideologies that continue to kill. And speaking, then only to God, listening to this voice of the Ukrainian land and the voice of the blood of our innocently murdered brothers, fathers, and sisters."

1) Another interesting sermon by Pat. Kirill to unpack. This one was from Tuesday, and he spoke at length about the situation in Ukraine.
Kirill begins by alluding to a certain "darkness of heart", reflecting changing moods in Russia since mobilization.
2) "what is happening today in the expanses of Holy Russia certainly darkens the hearts of many"
He says that he personally is affected by the war, that it weighs on him all day, every day.
He expresses hope that it will soon end. Note that he does not speak of Russian victory.
3) In fact, he never seems to explicitly support political unity between Russia and Ukraine, and this comes just three days before the "annexation", which he conveniently did not need to attend, because he contracted Covid... So says the Patriarchate.

1) I updated the blogpost with Pope Francis' latest statements on the war in Ukraine. Today's words at the Angelus were by far the most significant. He dedicated the whole of his reflection to the subject, clearly rattled by Putin's latest move to "annex" regions of Ukraine.
2) Francis made a heartfelt appeal for renewed peace efforts. "How much blood must still flow for us to realize that war is never a solution, only destruction? In the name of God and in the name of the sense of humanity that dwells in every heart, I renew my call for an immediate
3) ceasefire. (...) My appeal is addressed first and foremost to the President of the Russian Federation, imploring him to stop this spiral of violence and death, also for the sake of his own people. On the other hand, saddened by the immense suffering of the Ukrainian people as

1) As the Patriarch of Moscow was rambling about how dying on the battle field magically forgives sins, Major Archbishop Shevchuk was saying these rather beautiful words...
2) "Those words about the Lord's Cross, about God's love, which warms and saves, resurrects and gives hope, are life-giving for Ukraine in the conditions of war. Today, the whole world is wondering where we, our people, get the strength that allows us to resist the aggressor,
3) who grinds his teeth against Ukraine and no longer knows what to do with us. Where do Ukrainians have the strength to resist? We give an answer to this question: Ukrainians love and feel that God loves them. Ukrainians are strong because they love their land, Motherland, their

1) According to the Portuguese jesuits, there were at least 8 sexual abusers in the order over the past 70 years in Portugal. All of the suspects are dead, and no cases, civil or canonical, were opened at the time.
In some cases priests were suspended from certain activities.
2) The last case took place in the late 80s, early 90s, but that offender has also died. None of the alleged offenders were named.
Most of the abuse took place in the context of Jesuit-run schools.
3) An important factor is that this information seems to have been provided freely by the order, after its own internal investigation, at a time when an independent commission is investigating abuse in the Church in Portugal in general.

1) Remarkably, just one you think Kirill has gone over the top, the Russian Muslims manage to outdo him in their embrace of Russian militarism.
This is from a speech from Russia's chief Mufti, on 23/9.
2) "Today, when the President of the country announced a partial mobilization, I call on our Muslim clergy to support this call and convey to ordinary believers the words about the need to fulfill their civic duty to the state and society, to their families, to their children,
3) to their native land. And of course, Russian Muslims should not stand aside and come to the aid of our Fatherland in this difficult situation.
Realizing that our cause is right and just, and Allah Ta'ala is all in helping those who are on the right path.
