CR/DIY Filtration -

Measured dB, fan temp, power consump. (kWh), air velocity, particle concentraitons

Purchased a bunch of Lasko fans

Bunch of filters MERV 8-13 1-4" thick.
Made single panel versions
2-filter version (triangle)
CR 4-filter version
150-200 ug/m3 PM - capturing particle decay.

Start with none of the filters running

Repeat with each different type of DIY filter running

Use wifi controlled plugs. Never went into the room. Everything was controlled remotely to minimize human interference.
CADR for all PM < 100 nm.

MERV 8 vs 11 vs 13

CADR in CFM varied from 100 CFM to 350 CFM

4" filter work better than 1 and 2" filters

CADR much much higher for 100 nm particles in CR box config.
CADR values for 300 nm particles - similar story to the 100 nm data, slightly lower CADR values cause these are the most penetrating.
CADR for PM2.5 - performance again sees big uptick in the 4x CR config. ~ 400 CFM.
We also looked at the temperature of the fan. Measured over 8h. Room temp 69F. 1h 84F. 8h 90F.

CR Box had the lowest sustained temperature cause the fan had to work the least.
Noise produced 1' and 3'

all on speed 3.

Lowest level of noise on the 4x CR box. He measured 35dB.
Power consumed 80W per h. 12h a day operation = 1 kW. $6/mo. That's a single cup of coffee (per month) folks. That's not a lot of money for a whole lot of clean air.
(me) - all signs point to significant noise & filtration benefits of running a 2" 4x Merv-13 CR over all other varieties of DIY filtration intervention. It would have been better if he'd run all these experiments on speed 1 not speed 3; but I suspect story remains the same.

infectious aerosols exist. Particularly interested in submicron ones - deep in our respir. tract. Travel further. Remain airborne longer. For the same mass, they have higher surface area.

Settling times of different particles 1 um. They can be suspended in the air for 9h.
