As a human rights lawyer I've supported refugees, asylees, incarcerated citizens, abuse survivors, & the religiously persecuted

Today I share a client story—a Black & Indigenous Christian community whose ancestral cemetery was sold & desecrated—& our fight to get it back

/1
Tl:dr Prince William County improperly sold the Scott Cemetery & property—an ancestral cemetery of Black & Indigenous people—to a wealthy land developer & stood by as they desecrated 100+ graves. We're suing to return that property & need your support gofundme.com/f/save-histori…

/2
Full: The Coalition for Thoroughfare traces its ancestry back centuries. In Virginia history, Black & Indigenous found allyship together—intermarrying, worshiping, & burying their dead together. Denied their humanity, they found comfort in building community with each other.

/3
Due to Jim Crow, redlining, & disenfranchisement, their lands were divided, records removed and 'lost,' & sold to wealthy (usually white) land developers w/o knowledge or consent.

Sadly, that’s what happened at the Scott property & Cemetery which held ~100 ancestral graves

/4
Prince William County sold the Scott cemetery to a wealthy land developer. We did our best to negotiate out of court for its return. My clients were willing to forego everything else—but simply wanted to be able to honor their ancestors in peace & be buried among them. But—

/5
despite the unauthorized sale, the land developer first promised to protect the cemetery. Then unannounced, he bulldozed it—destroying ~100 ancestral graves. This was horrifying & painful beyond words. Initially PWC took responsibility & pledged publicly to make it right...

/6
...but the land developer blocked access to the cemetery w/a gate & boulder. He received 3 citations for not having permits for land disturbance—each was later dropped for yet unknown reasons. The developer then promised to work w/PWC & my client to restore the cemetery...

/7
...& PWC called the desecration a travesty, pledging strong protections to ensure no further development w/o thorough archaeological investigations of Thoroughfare. PWC & the developer even began initial talks & plans to restore the desecrated cemetery. This was short lived…

/8
...B/c unsurprisingly, the land developer inexplicably began to desecrate the cemetery—Again. But PWC would protect us, right? Nope. PWC refused to stop the developer—who now claimed that no such cemetery ever existed—despite records of its existence dating to the 1800s.

/9
And painfully, the desecration of the Scott cemetery continues to this day. PWC pledged oversight of the area but relinquished that oversight for some unknown reason. And despite several requests to the land developer to cease its movements, the desecration continues. So...

/10
We engaged in good faith negotiations & spoke with PWC attorneys & members of the Board of Supervisors. They admitted they messed up in not recording the cemetery properly as tax exempt. I was ecstatic that they admitted fault & hoped they'd negotiate to make things right.

/11
Sadly, PWC would not discuss any return of the Scott Cemetery. Strangely they refused to give any reason why. Negotiations collapsed. So, the Coalition instructed me to file a lawsuit against PWC as well as the land developer to protect this Black & Indigenous community.

/12
We've now filed suit. We're facing a well funded County that admits fault but won’t be accountable, & a well funded developer who is pretending no cemetery ever existed. We need public support for our legal fees.

In 2022 the erasure of Black & Indigenous people continues.

/13
On #IndigenousPeoplesDay no less, we need the public to rally behind this Black & Indigenous Christian community to ensure we have the resources to return their ancestral cemetery to them.

This is a foundational human rights issue. gofundme.com/f/save-histori…

/14
In closing—how enraging that in 2022 Black & Indigenous people are fighting for their humanity & the humanity of their ancestors—who themselves were denied their humanity for centuries.

We won't stop fighting. We need your support. Please donate.❤️

As a human rights lawyer I've represented women seeking justice my entire career.

As Iranian women protest Iran's hijab enforcement—while the 'morality police' murder Mahsa Amini—I want to post this thread about Hijab in Islam. I hope every guy (esp in Iran) reads this.

/1
People often conflate "Hijab" & "headscarf." Wearing the headscarf is one form of Hijab, but men often forget that Hijab is much more.

Accordingly, when addressing Hijab, the Qur'an does not address women first. It addresses men first.

What? Men observe hijab? Since when?

/2
Well, since always. The primary responsibility of observing Hijab is not on women — it is on men. It's critical to understand this point.

How must men observe Hijab? Men are commanded to not stare at women & to not be promiscuous. The Qur'an commands men to observe modesty.

I’m celebrating my 30 year anniversary of becoming a US Citizen. I love my country & I demand a more perfect Union

Per the great James Baldwin, “I love America more than any other country in the world &—exactly for this reason—I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”
Growing up in Section 8, on food stamps, & working since I was 15, I experienced for a decade the struggle that is every day for tens of millions of Americans.

I've experienced our country's ugly side—the death threats & xenophobia for being a Muslim immigrant of color, AND

/2
I've also seen the immense love, compassion, & justice of my fellow Americans. I've seen amazing teachers teach me & now teach my children. I've seen amazing public servants in law enforcement, elected office, & non-profit selflessly sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

Pitting Black people vs Asians is a common attempt to deflect from the legacy of Jim Crow white supremacy. So let's dig into it.

Addressing the perception that since Asians are "thriving" while are Black people still impacted by white supremacy?

Thread

/1
1. It isn't a myth that Black people are still impacted by white supremacy. Currently, the median white family's wealth is $147K while the median Black family's wealth is $3600. jstor.org/stable/pdf/res…

Black wealth is projected to drop to $0 by 2053 theguardian.com/inequality/201…
2. As I've said earlier, the $3600 vs $147,000 wealth disparity is no accident. It is the clear legacy of white supremacy as formal US Govt policy.

Today I turn 40-years-old. I'm incredibly blessed, & find myself thinking what I would tell my 20-year-old self if I could go back in time and talk to him?

So if you'll indulge me, a short thread on the "always do" and "never do" things I'd tell my younger self...

1/
1. Always remember to cut yourself slack & lift yourself up. Plenty of folks will try to tear you down—don't join them. Be your own biggest champion because sometimes you're all you're gonna have, and you should know that you're enough.

/2
2. Never sacrifice time on something that won't ultimately matter. Your time is your most precious gift, asset, treasure. Don't waste time in hopes that when you're older it'll "pay off." It won't, b/c that time is gone forever.

SCOTUS ruled in 2005 that police have “no legal duty to protect the public.” A Federal judge reaffirmed in 2018 when Parkland students sued the cop who ran away. They lost. AND—Qualified Immunity protects 99.9% of police negligence & violence.

So—how do we fix this?

Thread

/1
First, we must stop seeing public safety as a Police matter—& instead see it from a societal needs lens. One that accounts for (but not limited to) addiction, poverty, mental health, homelessness, suicide prevention—all things cops are NOT trained to do but asked to do anyway

/2
Remember, law enforcement *responds* to crime, but a living wage, food and water security, accessible healthcare, and public education *prevent* crime. This is a fact.

So if we want safer communities, and we all certainly do, then invest in people, not punishments.
