How Taylor’s song Labyrinth on Midnights is going to 100% relate to the 1986 movie called the Labyrinth and how it’s directly related to Taylor’s journey through her re-recording process, a 🧵:
1) This is the movie I’m referring to:
The entire movie revolves around this girl Sarah and her journey of trying to save her baby brother from a goblin king, played by David Bowie.
Sarah has to go through a labyrinth, which is a very elaborate maze, to try to get her baby brother back. Throughout the process, she has to ask for help from creatures and other things that live in the labyrinth. But most of them lie to her, or deceive her.
She has to ask for their help multiple times and she learns that she cannot trust everyone that she comes into contact with.
She constantly has to look out for herself throughout the movie, follow the rules, and make sure that she asks the right questions. She has to make decisions that literally feel like life or death to her. Along the way, she makes friends - and enemies (I’ll get into them later)
Now here is where it gets interesting. Remember how I said the main character Sarah has to get through the labyrinth to save her brother? Guess how long she has?
That’s right! She has 13 HOURS. And guess what the clock looks like? Guess what time MIDNIGHT actually is?
That’s right! THE 13 IS AT MIDNIGHT
So how does all of this relate to Miss Swift? We all know about her relationship with 13. We all know about midnights, but…
The main character Sarah has to save her baby brother. I mean he’s a BABY. What do babies represent? They represent youth and innocence.
To Taylor, her previous recordings and songs that she worked so hard on are her baby. They represent HER youth and innocence.
Therefore, the song labyrinth is going to be all about the process and emotions that she felt while trying to navigate re-recording her work that she so rightfully deserves to own. But WAIT - THERES MORE
This guy, Hoggle, befriends her. He acts like he’s trying to help her. But really he’s going behind her back. He’s motivated by materialistic things like jewelry and things that shine. He constantly ditches her when things get tough. HE represents Scott Borchetta.
The main goblin king, David Bowles character, represents either Scooter, or the entire music industry. He’s the one withholding her baby brother, or in Taylor’s case, her Masters.
Here’s the most IMPORTANT PART. When the clock strikes MIDNIGHT (13:00), Sarah yells “you have no power over me.” By Taylor taking reigns and re-recording her work, she’s showing everyone that SHES in control.
Wanna know what Sarah wears throughout the entire movie?
Doesn’t it look EERILY SIMILAR to what Taylor wore on her FIRST RE-RECORDING?
Therefore, WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES 12, WE MEET OURSELVES. Midnight SHARP.
This song is going to be about HER JOURNEY, trials and tribulations, of her musical career, and claiming back what is so rightfully HERS.
Here’s some other little tidbits that I couldn’t logically place in but they seem important/relevant:
Some advice the character gets along the way is “the way forward is sometimes the way back”. Which makes sense for a labyrinth. And ALSO directly correlates to her doing her re-recordings!
This little red haired cutie who befriends Sarah and helps her no matter what? His name is Ludo. But could represent Abigail or Tree!
And last but not least, for now. Check out this cutie that helps the character in the beginning of the movie. THE SCARF.
@taylorswift13 @taylornation13 if I’m right about any of this - ANY of it - pls let me meet you. I’m BEGGING 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Also - I thought of all of this myself and I haven’t seen this anywhere yet - although I’m not on socials like Tik Tok too much. But I hope that this make sense and that it sounds original! I have the notes in my notes app to prove my train of thought lol
Lastly: one of the most inspirational and pivotal quotes of the movie is “Through dangers unknown and hardships outnumbered I have made my way” (she says this right before she says “you have no power over me.” Which sounds very reminiscent to…
… the last part of “Why She Disappeared” (what Taylor wrote and played during the Rep tour show):
“Without your past,
you could never have arrived-
so wondrously and brutally,
By design or some violent, exquisite happenstance
...here."
