Our @AEA_ChiefExec Peter Stanyon has said: "Removing barriers to voting is always welcome, and both we and our members will make sure to respond to this consultation to suggest what practical steps and resources are needed to make reforms a reality. 1/10
"The next scheduled @SeneddWales election in 2026 and Welsh council elections in 2027 may seem a long way off, but existing electoral legislation is already incredibly complex and changes need time and careful planning. 2/10
"Running pilots for automatic registration and other reforms must take into account the work Returning Officers, Electoral Registration Officers and electoral administrators are already facing to prepare for changes brought in by the #ElectionsAct 2022. 3/10
"Affecting UK Parliamentary and Police and Crime Commissioner elections in Wales, the new law is set to bring in #VoyterID from May 2023 and changes to postal voting, and votes for life for British citizens living overseas. 4/10
“While being generally supportive of any measures that modernise registration processes, the challenges introduced by devolution must not be underestimated. 5/10
"Divergence between registration methods has the potential to introduce voter confusion, leading to the unintended consequence of hindering participation in elections. 6/10
"At present Police and Crime Commissioner polls can be combined with Senedd & Welsh council elections, & UK Parliamentary with council polls. Given the challenges differences in voting franchise and more would bring, we question whether these combinations should continue. 7/10
"We will be asking whether the Welsh and/or UK Government intend to bring forward legislation to resolve this to reduce potential confusion for voters and everyone involved in standing in and running elections. 8/10
“With a high turnover of electoral administrators across the UK in recent years, Returning Officers and their teams in Wales will need extra support as they tackle the challenges of legislative divergence and electoral reform across Welsh and UK polls. 9/10
We continue to encourage @WelshGovernment to consider establishing an election management board for Wales to provide direction and resource, as well as much needed guidance and training.” 10/10

With the announcement the Coronation of His Majesty The King will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023, we know election teams with scheduled polls on 4 May 2023 will need to know how this may affect the election timetable 1/5 #LocalGov#Elections
We do not know yet whether the May Day bank holiday will be moved to Friday 5 May, in the same way May Day 2020 was moved for the VE Day 75th anniversary. 2/5
There is also the potential issue of holding Friday election counts on what may now be a bank holiday, or even Coronation Day if parish council counts are planned for 6 May. 3/5
