So, last week, Mermaids – a charity that supports young trans people and their families – announced that they had been forced to shut down their helpline 💔

Why? Because of a torrent of 'intolerable abuse'.

On top of closing down both helplines and webchat, the charity has said that once they resume work, they would have reduced hours as a ‘duty of care towards staff and volunteers’.

This is deeply concerning, as Mermaids helps offer life-saving services to young people and their families. With a helpline like that closed – albeit temporarily – it means that people had one less network to go to.

Many of the patients – as Alcor Life Extension Foundation calls them – are people who were terminally ill with cancer, ALS or other diseases with no cure in the present day.

One of the patients is Matheryn Naovaratpong, the youngest person to be cryogenically frozen.

Alcor’s former CEO, Max More, explained why the family chose:

🗣️ ‘A little girl from Thailand who had brain cancer. Both her parents were doctors and she had multiple brain surgeries and nothing worked, unfortunately. So they contacted us.’

Melanin Gamers is an online community launched in 2018 that promotes diversity and inclusion in the gaming industry while providing a safe space for all 🕹

They started a project called ‘The Watch’, a digital community watch to ‘eliminate racism in the gaming community’ 👾

Both groups are calling on major developers and publishers like Activision Blizzard to create real accountability in-game for players by improving the reporting mechanism for the racist behaviour that has ‘gone unchecked for far too long’ ❌
