The men's suit. It's a way to not be naked, but it's also a powerful signaling device that's very culturally loaded
suits are the uniform of power, wealth, and success. That's why "power suit" is a thing, and "power tie" too
suits are about self-respect, showing "sense of occasion" and respect for others, or setting (e.g. important transactions, graduations, funerals, weddings)
Suits are a fashion platform. Just like a piece of bread is just a setup to 1k different sandwiches, suits are just an invitation to self-expression
In #Freemasons circles in the USA people like to fight about suits. Lots of lodges require them. Some consider it old fashioned/unnecessary. Others consider it absolutely necessary

It's a symbol fight: those against old-school signaling vs. those after the meaning of the symbol
old-school signaling: I don't want to flaunt wealth or create an overly formal, stuffy atmosphere I just want to be me

meaning of the symbol: we aim for self-respect, sense of occasion

the men's suit, in 2022 is stuck in the middle
in Silicon Valley, casual wear (the hoodie) eventually got usurped by the $800 luxury founder hoodie. "How to signal wealth & power while still looking relaxed and informal"

the existence of such things is a critical clue that the clothes don't matter, the signaling DOES
if fashion is self-expression, suit resistance makes a lot of sense as a way young people intentionally differentiate themselves from the cultural norms of the older generation. And they have; suits are out of fashion in most work environments; expensive casual is ascendant
for #Freemasons I would hope that we would insist on the ideas of self-respect, sense of occasion, while being willing to bend on most everything else. After all, nobody's wearing suits like these, this stuff does (and should!) change
In certain contexts (notably, funerals) self-expression takes a back seat and "sense of occasion" is in the driver's seat

look at how they all look the same, this is on purpose, and is arguably good (in this context)

Are clothes signaling, or self-expression? Yes.

Pardes, and exegesis (critical explanation or interpretation of a text) can apply to most any text

Let's do "the tortoise and the hare" one of Aesop's fables. Image
I think most people know the tortoise and the hare but here's a recap if you don't. Image
the plain surface meaning is that a rabbit raced a tortoise, and the tortoise won the race, which was unexpected.

Simple, that's what the story says. While there are other levels at play, this is an accurate and complete account.

Notes on "support by disagreeing well" and what it might mean to disagree well, as a branch off of this tweet
"Stay within OP's frame (or extend it)". If the claim is coffee is best morning drink, disagree about morning drinks; do not switch frames and talk about after-dinner drinks (coffee is bad bc caffeine)
the frame that OP offers is the "playground" so to speak. If each utterance is an invitation to play, you need to play *here* not on some other playground of your invention. That's the frame/supporting OP.

STORY TIME: Harry Potter Sorting Hats, and Academic Disciplines

A 🧵
@QiaochuYuan is right, they aren't particularly good at relationships. This is because:

*people go study psychology because they're drawn to find out what's wrong with them*

it is not the case that psychology makes you charismatic or better at relationships
professions and areas of study act like the Harry Potter Sorting Hat. They look inside of you and bin you with a kind of crew of people

@AbstractFairy I don't see a difference here between what I meant by crowd and what you mean by scene. The crowd isn't everybody, it's those people who are engaged in futurethink, picking, research, speculation, "inventing the future"

The "broad crowd" (everybody) takes what they're given
@AbstractFairy you may know this graphic. What's called "early adopters" themselves can only come in when something is really practical

the end of the true innovation curve is where this curve *begins* Image
@AbstractFairy "the broad crowd" (late majority) broadly waits for the world to move under their feet and sways because they must
