🚨 | Random fact-check company @LogicallyIN has done a fact-check on a recent statement 'August 2022 saw the highest mortality rate in England in 15 years'

Their fact-check is FALSE ❌

See thread

1/

logically.ai/factchecks/lib…
The graphic in question which they are fact checking shows death rates in England for all persons in August of each year.

In August 2022 the age-standardised death rate was 915.7, the highest since August since 2007 when it was 986.

2/ Image
To get to these numbers you download one of the ONS spreadsheets (link here) -> ons.gov.uk/file?uri=/peop…

Table 1 shows the death rates for every month in England for all people from Jan 2001 onwards.

Taking the August numbers you get this data... shown in the image.

3/ Image
This is the first stage of a fact check - you check to see if the graphic and official data published are the same.

The company has missed this stage, but you will see August 22 is the highest death rate since 2007.

4/
The statement made by the presenter says August 22 saw the highest mortality rate in 15 years. If you want to be pedantic, it could have been a little clearer, saying it was for August months only - but that was on the screen on the chart while talking about it.

5/
Now the fact-check article does not actually check the data for August - which is what is shown in the graphic.

The fact check relates to deaths for 2022 as a whole - which the broadcast piece was not commenting on.

The second stage - check the correct 'facts'

6/
The fact check also has a verdict that - 'no indication of a concerning trend of excess deaths'. This is in stark contrast to what the data is showing.

If seeing higher-than-expected deaths all summer is not a concern to these fact-checkers that in itself is worrying.

7/
My recent blog talks of the numbers of higher-than-expected deaths - data a few weeks old but you get the picture from it.

8/

statsjamie.co.uk/more-deaths-th…
The Financial Times journalist John Burn Murdoch has been highlighting excess deaths over the summer months.

9/

Nick Triggle at the BBC wrote this piece on the subject.

If there are no excess deaths - then they best start writing to all these journalists looking at the same data.

10/

bbc.co.uk/news/health-62…
The fact check also claims to be checking the claim greater percentage of excess deaths in younger adults.

This is made by looking at expected deaths over the summer vs those that actually occurred when removing Covid deaths.

They have made no attempt to look at that data

11/
The fact check also talks of excess deaths and vaccinations. I made no mention of deaths and vaccinations in the broadcast - my recent blog on the matter says it is difficult to conclude causation without data.

They do correctly say I was commenting on the NHS performance.

12/
Some say higher-than-expected deaths are due to vaccinations. The presenter finished by making this comment.

This is my recent conclusion - there are many factors, which warrant further investigation, which the Department for Health has called for.

13/ Image
In summary, a poor fact-check, riddled with mistakes. The highest mortality rate in 15 years in August 2022 is as published by the ONS. Comparing this to something else without looking at the chart discussed shoddy work.

There is an excess deaths issue in 2022 as well.

14/
If you want to get more technical and factor in statistical confidence intervals, then the death rate in August 2022 is similar to 2012. But most people do not understand this concept and people look at the central estimate.

15/
Now, @LogicallyIN can update their check with my response in this thread.

Making claims the graphic related to August death rates is false when sources are shown above showing this, then publishing their claim on the internet is reputationally damaging.

16/
Who checks the fact checkers when they are free to make claims without even checking the source data correctly.

17/ends
I should have added I was alerted to this fact check through Facebook as a video of me talking about the data, as explained in the thread above has been marked as false by Facebook through said company.

🚨 | Care worker numbers fall for the first time ever, leaving more people without support

A factor was mandatory vaccination for care home staff in place from Nov 2021 until Feb 2022 playing a part in the decision making for some to leave the sector.

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-631775…
The lack of care workers has wider impact on others. For example some people in hospital cannot be discharged even when fit if there is a lack of care.

This can clog up hospitals, putting other patients at higher risk of death.
Low wages also a factor in retaining staff. An average care worker pay is £1 per hour less than healthcare assistants in the NHS new to their roles.

The Government are recruiting more people from overseas to help fill gaps.

🚨 | A rise in Covid cases and @BBCHughPym at the BBC all over it for main news bulletin even when little impact on serious illness.

💥 Excess deaths for months for non Covid reasons in under 60s and nothing on main news that I’ve seen

😞 Selective BBC reporting just shocking

🚨 | UK experiencing an uptick in Covid cases across communities - not unsurprising with more households mixing since schools returned.

💥 Very little change in patients in critical care because of Covid - very low since Omicron hit and hardly noticeable vs earlier periods.

1/ Image
Looking at all critical care beds in England there are around 948 unoccupied beds vs the 65 occupied primarily for Covid

There are a further 136 patients who have tested positive for Covid, but the main reason for admission is something else.

Most patients in for Non-Covid.

2/ Image
Looking at all beds in England we are seeing a larger impact than just critical care - these are milder illnesses but they do take up NHS capacity.

The pace of increase is similar to the March 22 & June 22 waves. March wave peaked after 4 weeks, and June after 6 weeks.

🚨 | UK announces getting rid of the 45% tax rate that will cost £2.4bn next year - IMF intervenes and markets in meltdown.

UK pledges more than £2.4bn to Ukraine and no market response

Same outcome - £2.4bn cost to UK taxpayer

USA where IMF headquartered has top rate of 37%
The markets in meltdown is not just down to the one announcement of the top rate of tax cut but the media reporting would have us think it is.

Interest rates going up also inevitable because they are lower here than countries like the USA - which impacts on value of £ vs $.
Interest rates last week went up 0.75% in USA so there is close to 1% difference between the USA and UK which will be a factor in the weaker pound.

The mini budget last week should have focused more on money in pockets on poorer households, but top rate tax cut not massive cost.

🚨 | In the past 19 weeks we have had 10,316 more deaths than we would expect for the time of year if the chance of dying was the same as pre-pandemic.

Excluding any deaths linked to Covid - more deaths than expected up to the age of 65 and fewer among those age 65+ Image
Data from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities suggests we are seeing over the same period higher than expected deaths linked to heart issues.

2/ Image
Aug 22 saw the highest mortality rates in England for any August for 15 years

This is the case when you account for changes in the structure of the population - more older people

Over the longer term, healthcare improvements have generally led to a fall in mortality rates

🗞️ | I wrote back in June of record channel migrants by September.

Well the numbers have kept flowing in and we have just hit the record numbers for a year, with almost four months of the year to go.

Based on latest rate set to hit ~ 60k in 2022

statsjamie.co.uk/record-channel…
The cost of accommodation will be around £3.5bn a year and when you add all the other costs associated with this inflow, could be closer to £6/7bn a year.

This is big business for the gangs running the boats and the businesses putting them up.

Since I wrote the blog we have had more data on the nationality of those coming over.

Albania now tops the list.
