For the first time in the history of the country’s electrical grid, Greece was completely powered by renewable energy for at least five hours on Friday.
IPTO, Greece’s independent power transmission operator, said the country reached a record high of 3,106 megawatt hours at 8:00 am local time.
The Green Tank, an environmental think tank, tweeted, '👏According to #ΑΔΜΗΕ , on 07/10/2022 the production from RES covered in 💯% the electricity demand #ενέργειας for 5 whole hours.'
'👏 Record optimism for the country's transition to clean energy, weaning off #ορυκτά fuels & ensuring our energy sufficiency,' the tweet continued.

'There is a growing understanding that something very different has to be done if our children are going to have a planet to live on that is in any way pleasant, much less survivable, so this is an expanding trend,' said Wendy Schultz.
Schultz is a futurist who co-authored the report and serves as co-founder and director of Jigsaw Foresight.

'Is it happening as fast as any of us would want? Possibly not, which is why it’s important to get the word out.'

Though the agreement doesn’t have authority over countries’ policies, nor does it set specific targets for specific members or companies, President of the ICAO Council Salvatore Sciacchitano said he hopes the proposed timeline will 'contribute to the green innovation...'
'...and implementation momentum, which must be accelerated over the coming decades to ultimately achieve emissions-free powered flight.'
