On this #PrimeDay, see what Amazon's products take from you.

We made a guided tour @washingtonpost of Amazon's dream home, where every appliance is also a spy.

See exactly what Alexa, Echos, Fire TVs, Rings, Roombas and more tell Amazon about you: wapo.st/3g2A9bx

@washingtonpost Amazon’s products can collect data about you when you

Talk
Sleep
Walk by
Show your face
Cough
Snore
Come home
Leave home
Turn on the lights
Turn up the heat
Play music
Watch TV
Join Wifi
Wash your hands
Cook popcorn
Receive a package
Drive places

@washingtonpost I discovered Amazon had collected more than 600,000 data points about my home since 2019.

Every flick of a lightswitch.

And Amazon offers no setting to stop it from collecting this data. (Best option is to auto-delete after 3 months.)

@washingtonpost Amazon touts its privacy controls and transparency.

But it took me weeks of investigations & data requests to figure out the basics of what Amazon knows.

These products can be useful, but it's a farce to say we're giving informed “consent” to this.

NEW @washingtonpost:

Everyone’s AirPods are dying.

Apple has no way to fix them.

But I found the trick to at least getting discounted AirPod replacements, if you know the code word: wapo.st/2MpvP3n
@washingtonpost To see why AirPods are doomed to die in as little as 2 years, I performed an autopsy.

It required a special vibrating knife to melt plastic, on loan from @kwiens & @iFixit.

The lesson was clear: AirPods were never meant to be opened, much less repaired. wapo.st/2MpvP3n
@washingtonpost @kwiens @iFixit Inside, AirPods have a tiny battery the size of a noodle that’s entirely glued into place.

Every rechargable lithium-ion will die eventually. But this one’s never, ever coming out.

It’s like a car with the tires glued on. wapo.st/2MpvP3n
