Please understand, Erica had to continue to work with Christopher Backhouse while enduring his relentless harassment campaign against her. @ucl and @Fermilab took no actions. He was not fired. He left on his own immediately prior to this becoming public. theguardian.com/education/2022…
Therefore, the most logical explanation for him leaving academia and securing himself a job in the private sector was to shield himself from the fallout of his vile actions becoming public.
And therefore, the logical reason he is having to face any sort of accountability for his actions (which he remains unapologetic for despite solid evidence linking him directly to the harassment campaign) is because of Erica's lawsuit. Not @ucl, not @Fermilab, no one but Erica.
@ucl @Fermilab It is only because of Erica's ingenuity that there is ANY sort of justice for her or accountability for him (albeit not nearly enough). All while enduring his relentless harassment campaign, having to work directly with him, going on faculty hob hunts and overall being a f-- boss
The amount of time, energy and money she had to put in to this just to get some small restitution and respite from this harassment campaign is just shocking.
It was at home, on the phone, through the mail, through the cops, through twitter. There were sexual solicitations from strangers and anonymous death threats. Folks, this man was staying up nights to do this. This was obsessive and it was terrifying.
And just to add, this was all coming on the foot of the #MeTooSTEM debacle where survivors, including Erica were exploited by Beth Ann and then attacked (by both her and her pseud sciencing_bi) when criticizing her treatment towards the very people Beth Ann touted to be helping
A note, the vast majority of you enabled her, didn't believe us, or only supported us in the shadows then either. And it wasn't until she all made a bunch of PIs look like chumps by getting them to attend a funeral of a bi, indigenous person she FAKED that she lost her cred.
This is all to say Erica has endured SO MUCH over the past YEARS. She has consistently held bullies and harassers accountable when others wouldn't. She is also unbelievably kind, funny and a great scientist. I'm so happy she is my friend but so angry for what she has gone thru.
