and suddenly me vibing with my attending landed me a presentation at an int’l conference?!! let’s tok about sex, baybee 😎 highlights below 🧵1/ #PAG@jsimmsce
MYTH: teens now are having more sex than before (@nytimes)
ps: let’s stop using “virgins”. it’s patriarchal and outdated
Exposure to sexual media was associated with: (1) permissive sexual attitudes (2) permissive perception of peers’ sexual experiences (3) greater acceptance of common rape myths (4) age of sexual initiation, overall sexual experience, risky sexual behavior, etc.
Consumption of media is associated with rape myth acceptance (ie victim blaming, etc)
@tiktok_us has 80 million monthly active users, 32.5% between ages 10-19! Content creators can now share sex-positive sex education content. However, algorithms promote what is popular, not always what’s accurate ⚠️
Sex positive TV shows have taken a unique approach to talk about sex with youth and encourage curiosity. Like this epic scene from @bigmouth, among others including Sex Education (Netflix), Atypical (Netflix), and Generation (HBO Max)
We have a ways to go, but youth clearly rely on media to privately and discretely explore these topics. Tapping into this as a safe place to obtain *accurate* information can transform a generation to have a healthy relationship with their sexuality and gender expression 🌟
