In light of their decision to invite two notorious climate deniers to speak at their conference, I have decided I must withdraw from participating in the CC Forum "Investment in Sustainable Development" event in London next week london.cc-forum.com
🧵1/8
Given the immense stakes & need for immediate climate action, I cannot in good conscience lend legitimacy to an event that would profile grifters who knowingly shill for fossil fuel polluters, even as millions have their lives & livelihoods destroyed by climate impacts 2/8
I was initially excited to speak at the event, billing itself as a “conference which is 100% dedicated to investment in sustainability”. But was horrified to subsequently discover Monckton & Morano added to the agenda. Both are infamous for spreading climate disinformation 3/8
Monckton has even been given his own keynote address, despite eminent climate scientists having previously testified to congress that he is “very misleading”, “profoundly wrong” and “simply false” in his beliefs about climate science. 4/8
Morano has the dubious honour of being awarded the title of ‘climate change misinformer of the year’ and currently works for a think tank that has received funding from fossil fuel majors such as Exxon & Chevron. 5/8
I feel it is wholly inappropriate for any conference that claims to be promoting climate action to be facilitating the promotion of such disinformation.
Their entire shtick is to sow doubt & confusion to undermine public trust in the science of climate change. 6/8
Perhaps most concerning of all is the announcement that the UK’s new climate minister, Graham Stuart, is also speaking right before Monckton & Morano.
What on earth is he doing speaking at an event alongside them?! 7/8
If, like me, you can no longer take part in conferences that promote climate deniers then please boycott, speak loudly & use your voice & platform to create an alternative. We know a better world is possible if conferences like this stop enabling those willing to destroy it! /end
Let's pause & reflect a minute about what this shocking picture of @GretaThunberg 's arrest tells us about the current state of #climate politics.
A short 🧵on some key lessons we can take from this image
2/ What a difference 6 years makes!
In many ways climate politics is in a very different place to how it was when @GretaThunberg first started her strikes outside the Swedish parliament in the summer of 2018 to try and put the #ClimateCrisis on the agenda
3/ Largely as a result of protest movements #climate has now entered mainstream debate.
And the stakes are clearer than ever.
Following the latest @IPCC_CH report in 2022 @UN Secretary General @antonioguterres made clear we are faced with a 🚨"Code Red for humanity"
I've put together a thread giving a quick run down of some of the #climate movement's hard won victories from 2023 to inspire us for the year ahead! 🥳🎉

January: After a persistent pressure from campaigners over many years the Royal Opera final cut its ties with BP!
Brilliant work by all those fighting for #FossilFreeCulture
I’m thrilled to announce @LauraLoHorn, @PHellermann, @CharlieJGardner & my new paper in @FrontEducation.
Why, despite acknowledging the urgency of climate emergency, have universities yet to respond adequately to the crisis?
A short🧵
2/ Thousands of higher education institutions have made climate emergency declarations, however most academics are still operating as if nothing has changed.
Our paper asks - why does such a knowledge-action gap persist?
3/ It's now widely recognised that we face an existential risk from cascading environmental shocks.
These shocks threaten the socio-ecological conditions which support the complex social organisations we currently take for granted - including Higher Education Institutions.
