If we want functional systems (healthcare, education, government, any of them) to be left for our children and grandchildren, we must all speak out now about how unacceptable it has been that our Govts have managed the pandemic counter to valid evidence.
Canadian provinces and American states have health sciences librarians. It is Library Month. These research heroes are well-equipped to search for evidence with the least bias possible. And they can teach you how! They’re ready and waiting for your e-mail or phone call.
#medLibs
#canmedlibs

You don’t need to be lost in the sea of misinformation and disinformation. Within a few hundred kms or miles of you is a health sciences librarian who would love to show you how to answer the questions you have with the highest quality research available.
I don’t think I have been loud or forceful enough about this. I don’t think I truly realized how deep the need is for this kind of advocacy. I’ve always thought too highly of others and given them the benefit of the doubt.

No longer.

#todaythislibrarian is rejecting ignorance.
And we must protect and enhance our libraries. Because clearly too many people in power are afraid of data, evidence, unbiased research. It is to their advantage to hinder access to not only the research itself, but the librarians who can guide the way.

Streaming and virtual options 💕

Having been out of the full time workforce for a few years, when everyone figured out zoom and teams in 2020 I was behind the curve.

But through 2022 I have happily been using virtual options to connect with people and researchers globally.
I left full time work because of my unique situation that really boiled down to support and child care.

However, virtual options erase many of those concerns. Many nights my oldest asks if I have a meeting that night. If I don’t, we focus on cuddles and bedtime stories.
If I do, my kids prefer that I do the meeting in the room with them while they fall asleep. They’re really attached - we’ve just always been like this. Sometimes I have an earbud in; other times they like to listen too. I really appreciate the flexibility of online meetings.

I attended an event today where the person in charge took COVID precautions including wearing a respirator. The person also clearly told everyone that tough times were ahead - this isn’t back to normal. Between COVID, climate change, conflict - more difficulties ahead.
/1
I saw more masks - especially respirators - than I had in months.

I saw a sign advertising for a masks required version of what I was attending.

I was in an NB church. 💕 and I was very heartened to listen to a person responsible for the safety of others who didn’t pretend.
This was a massive improvement over our school system - honest leadership. Awareness and communication of the risks. Safer option provided with required masks.
Better than my recent trips to dentist, orthodontist, family Dr, where all wore surgical masks.

Thinking back to when I worked in an NB hospital - LEAN/six sigma management was ALL the rage. So much time; effort put into streamlining and improving processes and being sure to tally up all the time and cost savings.

How much of that are we throwing away by letting COVID rip?
What’s the point of improving lab TAT, streamlining comms, using less printer paper if we’re going to needlessly fill the hospitals with COVID patients and kill our effectiveness by working short staffed all the time? Every transmission we stop that prevents a 🏥 saves 💰
Huge amounts of money saved in costs of care when we keep people out of the hospital and keep our healthcare employees healthy - by reducing COVID rates in the communities in which these people live! Letting it rip undoes all that effort to increase productivity and efficiency.

Stray Friday thoughts...
If you're not from NB sorry for the last couple of days - bonkers times here. Minister of education who called parents like me "HEPA militants" and told the province in Jan that our kids wouldn't get sick resigned with a 2-page breakup letter. /1
(Fella also insisted that HEPA be studied but still bought super bogus Aerus units (which do potentially harmful air chemistry) for the 60 schools in NB lacking mech vent at a price of $3 million; but EECD won't allow parents to donate HEPA to schools that do have mech vent) /2
His BFF Lamrock wrote an awesome report in April telling PH and EECD to sort it out and bring back masks in the meantime, neither of which happened.

ANYWAY, in the breakup letter he relays an incident of Premier Higgs yelling "data my ass!" at a senior civil servant. /3

Last #DataMyAss for today... spreadsheet showing just the z2 (Saint John area) PCR test positivity ratio for each week alongside the hospitalizations. Scroll down to the bottom to see WTF is happening in z2 now :(

And here's where I linked to z1, which is less straightforward due to having both Horizon and Vitalite facilities:
Here's Fredericton-area, zone 3, PCR test positivity ratios for each week matched up with z3 hospitalizations for that week. #DataMyAss

Some data for your asses: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
Sorry rushed to get that done before school bus. What is that spreadsheet?

Looking at PCR test positivity rate for zone 1, displayed w other relevant info from the same week. Hospitalizations and HCW off work due to COVID.
Can we use the test positivity rates to give us an idea of how healthcare services are going to be impacted in the days that follow? Please look for interesting patterns. Also let me know of any errors. I think I found an error in each of the RHAs’ original reporting.
