2/x Your "read header" tactic betrays that someone who isn't nearly half as clever as they believe they are about how email/networking works is talking you into some pretty shoddy journalism. I don't blame you in a way: I've had to explain this to several very wishful mktg folks

3/x but all your "receipt" means is that some network request was made. It means nothing in terms of whether or not a person (let alone a specific person) received it, viewed it or interacted with it in any way. You simply can't do "gotcha" journalism over email.

5/x I'd like a good hit on FB as much as the next guy, but I'd advise you to retract and reclaim whatever journalistic integrity you can here so if there's an important FB story in the future you can tell it with a modicum of credibility.

Also, I haven't spoken to @andymstone in roughly a decade, but I worked with him in a pretty high-pressure environment and I would have remembered if he spoke to his colleagues that way. He doesn't.

Just to level-set here: The entirety of my knowledge about India and its politics is entirely derivative of

- That one friend I had when I was a kid
- Some other guys I worked with and drank with
- T20 Cricket

- That 6-part documentary I kinda half-watched while I was washing dishes
- Stuff I hear on the radio when I'm dropping my kids off at school in the morning
- The restaurant up the street that gave me a free dosa once

So I'm not running for Prime Minister or endorsing political parties or anything like that. I can point to Uttar Pradesh on a map, which instantly puts me in the top .001 percent of "Americans who know jack squat about India"

but anything I say should be taken with a giant grain of salt.

I guess the last thing I'll say is I don't want to drag anyone doing the hard & important work of investigative journalism. "When you stop hearing things you don't want to hear, you start to see things you don't want to see." Wire should do the right thing and apologize to Andy.
