1/5. I have been advocating cycling and walkability in #PakCities. Started #CyclingSunday and many other such events/campaigns. The purpose was always to promote sustainable modes of transportation. But our city officials want to do cycling lanes for photos only.
2/5. You cannot promote cycling and walkability without discouraging cars and supporting density & public transport. Had many meetings with CDA but they want to spend more money on roads, underpasses and paring plazas.
3/5. Cycling and walkability require an ecosystem that cannot nurture with the current city management and development model. The air quality of our cities is deteriorating. 40% of pollution comes from vehicular emissions. Still, our officials proudly post photos of roads.
4/5. Need to charge car-parking on roads, the toll on highways. No spending of public money on underpasses and parking plazas. Invest in public transport and abolish signal-free regimes in city centres and the main arteries of the city.
5/5. An overhaul of prevailing practices in city management is required.
