Yesterday, myself and ~30 scientists were detained by police after ringing the alarm at #WHS2022 where politicians kept lying to the public, claiming everything is fine. It isn't. The climate crisis is a health crisis. We need to #UniteAgainstClimateFailure and act NOW. 🧵
Everyone knows the science. Climate change is tightly linked with death by heat, zoonotic diseases like covid, malnutrition, etc. And it's only going to get worse. Unless we act. Unless scientists rise up and scream until we're heard. Because they haven't listened. Not really.
Joining civil disobedience action is scary. I never thought I'd be doing this. I'd be much more comfortable at the lab. But I can't ignore the evidence. I can't lie to myself that politicians will do the right thing. They haven't. Climate inaction is their goal.
Let's be honest, we don't know if protesting will work. But did writing papers and attending conferences like #whs2022 bring the radical changes we desperately need? I think you know the answer to that. So let's try something new. Let's make them listen.
We're scientists. When our methods fail, we change them and try again, and again and again. So join us. Join @ScientistRebel1 to fight for a liveable world. Join us as we #UniteAgainstClimateFailure.
And by the way, need more convincing? This is what @OlafScholz said about SCIENTISTS: "They do protests on climate and stuff like that, and they think that's going to improve our discussions. And I think the best way to improve the discussions is not to listen and move on."
If that doesn't fill you with rage, I don't know what will. "Climate and stuff like that" he said, as if this wasn't the defining crisis, if not catastrophe, of our lives. Politicians don't listen. If we don't make them, who will? #UniteAgainstClimateFailure
