๐จJournalists are exposed to every kind of attack, including police violence against reporters, ambushes by political activists, and reprisals instigated by criminal groups or corrupt local officials
๐จEver since general elections in the spring of 2019, won overwhelmingly by Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs Bharatiya Janata Party, pressure has increased on the media to toe the Hindu nationalist governmentโs line
๐จIndians who espouse Hindutva, the ideology that gave rise to radical right-wing Hindu nationalism, are trying to purge all manifestations of โanti-nationalโ thought from the public debate
๐จThe coordinated hate campaigns waged on social networks against journalists who dare to write about subjects that annoy Hindutva followers are terrifying and include calls for those journalists to be murdered
๐จCriminal prosecutions are often used to gag journalists critical of the authorities, with some prosecutors invoking Section 124a of the penal code, under which โseditionโ is punishable by life imprisonment
๐จIn 2020, the government took advantage of the coronavirus crisis to step up its control of news coverage by prosecuting journalists providing information at variance with the official position
๐จSituation is still very worrying in Kashmir, where reporters are often harassed by police & paramilitaries and must cope with utterly Orwellian content regulations and are liable to be closed, like Kashmir Times
๐จThe campaigns are particularly violent when the targets are women, which is also evident with the #Pegasus project where several female journalists were listed as potential targets

"Messrs Modi, Shah Preside Over The World's Largest Diarchy" -@derekobrienmp
BJP president: JP Nadda, extended
๐งWere members of the party consulted before the term was extended?
๐งWere elections held?
๐งOr was it just an edict issued from Modi and Shah?
U know the answer
Demonetisation
The diabolical diarchy made a habit of taking decisions without consulting anyone, be it other political parties or domain experts
This hare-brained scheme broke the back of India's informal economy, led to an estimated loss of 15 lakh jobs & caused many deaths.
Farm Bills
Opposition MPs were denied their right to ask for a division of votes and the Farm Bills were 'passed' by a voice vote, breaking every rule in the book
A year later, only after sustained protests by farmers, the twins running the diarchy had to backtrack
Two engineers of 2002 became the architects of 2020
๐ฅตEveryone knows what happened to those who pointed fingers at them for the blame on 2002
๐คNobody dares to point fingers at them, not even utter a sentence about them on 2020
Small thread based on 'Citizens Committee Report'
โThis report is such a credible, convincing and compelling indictment of all that has gone wrong, it should've led to a nationwide outrage - but the fact that it's barely been noticed, reflects how far and deep the rot has gone in our democracyโ
Harsh Mander
Report says โA credible massive information indicating abject police failures, including apparent police complicityโ
Report cites Kardampuri video of 24th Feb, "the clip shows men lying slumped on the street, being beaten by policemen who order them to sing the national anthem"
India's Struggle for Independence - Rise and Growth of Communalism
A chronological thread based on my reading
Communal ideology in a person, party or movement starts with the first stage - nationalist Hindu, nationalist Muslim, etc., and not as simple nationalist
Let's Start๐ถโโ๏ธ
There was hardly any communalism in India before the last quarter of the 19th century (until 1870s)
Syed Ahmed Khan, undoubtedly one of the outstanding Indians of the 19th century, loudly preached the commonness of Hindus and Muslims till the founding of the Congress in 1885
Communalism emerged as a consequence of the emergence of modern politics, politics of popular participation and mobilization of public opinion.
Because, in pre-modern politics, people were either ignored in upper-class based politics or were compelled to rebel outside the system
(Included in the corpus of the Buddhist Pali Canon, popular and highly regarded in Southeast Asia)
In times past, Dasaratha was the maharaja of Banaras and from his chief queen he had two sons, Rama-pandita and Lakkhana, and one daughter, Sita
๐งต
The queen died and Dasaratha grieved for her but eventually raised another to her status.
The second queen bore him one son, Bharata.
After this she asked repeatedly of Dasaratha that he declare her son the successor.
๐งต
Dasaratha, fearing that she might harm the older children, suggested that they go away to the forest and return to claim the kingdom on his death, which had been predicted for twelves years later.
The three traveled to the Himalayas where they built a small hermitage.
Has anyone watched @ptrmadurai interviewed by Karan Thapar on the Wire?
One can write a book out of that discussion
Let me quote some gems โจ๏ธ
@ptrmadurai Breaking the bonds of (caste) hierarchy started with the notion of self-respect
Everything flows from it
Independent thinking needs education
With education, you start to reason for yourself
It leads to rational thinking
Ultimately, self-determination and local self governance
Freedom of Speech
A notion that there's only one acceptable approach, one acceptable perspective - and there is a 'know all be all' force and everybody must count, otherwise you'll be branded anti-national
This is not a sign of a healthy progressive country with a great future
